Shupe, Mary (21 JAN 1879 - 8 JUL 1942)

Mrs. Elmer Shupe, nee Mary Degen, was born in Manitowoc county, Wis., Jan 21, 1879. When but a child two years of age she came with her parents to Clark county. The family settled on a farm 3 ½ miles northwest of Loyal. In those early days the land was heavily timbered. The Degen family, as did all of those early pioneer families worked hard and from their wooded acres a splendid farm was developed. Here Mrs. Shupe lived until her marriage to Elmer Shupe on March 27, 1893. They were married in Greenwood by the Rev. Hendren, one of Clark county’s pioneer preachers. One son, Frank Shupe, was born to this union.

After their marriage, they lived in the town of Beaver, until about 20 years ago, when they moved to the village of Loyal. Mr. Shupe died in 1935.

Mrs. Shupe will be missed by all who knew her. Her sunny disposition, kindly ways, and splendid character endeared her to all.

She was a member of the Methodist church.

About two weeks ago she was hurried to a Marshfield, Wisconsin Hospital, where she underwent an appendectomy. Last Tuesday she returned to her home and was apparently on the road to recovery of her health when a heart ailment developed and Wednesday, July 8, at about 10 o’clock in the evening her death occurred.

Her daughter-in-law cared for her after her return from the hospital, and her son, who had returned to his home, arrived before her death.

Mrs. Shupe is survived by her son, Frank Shupe of Birnamwood; a sister, Mrs. August Witt, of Loyal; and three brothers, Albert Degen of New Hampshire, Frank Degen of West Allis and Herman Degen of Seattle, Wash.

Two brothers, Fred Degen of Loyal and the Rev. August Degen of Burlington, preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held in the Methodist church at 2 p.m. Saturday. Interment was in the Pine Grove cemetery. The Rev. Myron Taylor officiated at the services. The hymns were sung by Mrs. Ray Prior and Mrs. Calvin Prior, with Mrs. Arnold Wicklund as accompanist.

The flowers were carried by Mrs. Arthur Darton, Mrs. William Loppnow, Mrs. Charles Clouse and Mrs. John Nelson.

Pallbearers were William Loppnow, Edward Bertz, Fred Cox, Fred Church, John and Charles Clouse.

Those from away who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Shupe, Birnamwood; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Degen and Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Paepke, West Allis; Mrs. Bertha Degen, Burlington and Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Zuege, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The Tribune joins the many friends of the bereaved in extending sympathy.
