Portz, Herman C. #2 (9 JUN 1879 - 14 JUL 1947)

Herman C. Portz of Chili (Clark Co., Wis.), 68, died Monday, July 14, 1947, and funeral services were conducted Thursday, at 1:30 o’clock at the home and 2 o’clock at the Evangelical United Brethren Church, Chili, with the Rev. S. A. Gutknecht officiating. Pallbearers were: William Wagner, William Grottke, Edward Ott, Ernest Lee, Clyde Brown and William Lindow. Included in the group who went from Neillsville were Judge Oscar Schoengarth, Walter Rush, Mr. and Mrs. Harland Kintzele, and Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Hubbard.

Mr. Portz had been prominent in Clark County public offices for the past 35 years. He held the office of chairman of the town of Fremont and had served on the county board, and was also chairman of the mediation board of Clark County.

Herman Carl Portz was born at Hartford, June9, 1879, and received his early education in Hartford and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. On Oct. 9, 1899, he was married in Waukesha to Josephine Nix of that city. After his marriage he lived for two years at Waukesha and came to this county in 1902. He purchased a 120 acre tract in 1906 and developed it into a modern dairy farm.

The deceased is survived by his wife; a son, Harry at home; two daughters, Mrs. Erwin (Dorothy) Haslow, Chili, and Mrs. David (Mabel) Gallagher, town of Fremont, Granton; three brothers, Adolph of Chili, George of Milwaukee, and Albert, Waukesha; and seven grandchildren. A son, Ellis, his parents, and four sisters preceded him in death.

Relatives from away who came for the funeral were: Harland LeCount, and Mr. and Mrs. Eifert of Hartford; Donald Portz and Mrs. Clark Mills of Waukesha; Rev. and Mrs. James LeCount of Montana, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Pappenheimer of Dancy; Mr. Helene Rottenbach and daughter, Mrs. Robert Tash, and son, Calvin, Milton Junction; Mrs. Percy Hallock, Rockland, Wis.
