Peterson, Shirley M. (28 JUN 1947)

The Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church, Neillsville (Clark Co., Wis.), was the scene, on June 28, 1947, of the marriage of Miss Shirley M. Peterson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John M. Peterson, Neillsville, and Duane L. Coyier, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee O. Coyier, Madison. The Rev. N. J. Dechant officiated at the 1:00 double ring ceremony. The church was decorated in a background of ferns with baskets of orchid gladioli and white peonies.

The bride, who was given in marriage by her father, was attired in a gown and veil which had been designed and made by her mother. The dress was of imported French illusion with a satin underskirt sytled in bouffant tiers with imported Chantilly lace inserts. The neckline of the fitted bodice had scalloped lines with seed pearls and lace trim. Tiny flounces of the illusion fell off the shoulder and the bodice ended in points in back and front, with shirred illusion edging. From a tiara of fresh white rosebuds fell a veil of French illusion, lace edged and with lace inserts and trimmed with seed pearls. The bride carried a bouquet with an orchid center surrounded by a white crescent-shaped bouquet of white roses and larkspur.

Miss Cyrena VanGorden, the maid of honor, wore orchid marquisette over taffeta, styled with a colonial off-the-shoulder neckline and a fitted bodice. The full shirred skirt was edged with white ruffling. She carried a heart-shaped bouquet of orchids and pink sweet peas, tied with wide satin ribbon. Her headdress was a bandeau of rosebuds and sweet peas. As bridesmaid, Miss Donna Coyier, Madison, sister of the groom, wore a gown identical to the one of the maid of honor, with a matching bouquet and headdress. Donna Rae Peterson, eleven, sister of the bride, was the junior bridesmaid. She wore a gown of white net over taffeta. The skirt was full and tiered, and trimmed with orchid buds and had off the shoulder ruching. Her headdress and flowers were identical to those of the other attendants.

The groom was attended by his brother, Robert of Madison, Dwight Nolen, Ridgway, Wis., and Charles Neff, Jr., ushered. Al the men wore rose boutonnieres.

Mrs. Millard Cole, organist, played Wagner’s wedding march as the party approached the altar, and the "Wedding March" by Mendelssohn as they left. Dr. Sarah Rosekrans sang "Oh Promise Me" and "Thanks Be To God." Miss Mary Tomlinson, Milwaukee, friend of the bride, played two violin selections preceding the ceremony. They were: "Liebestraum" by Liszt, and "Maid with the Flaxen Hair" by DeBussy.

The bridal couple held open house from 2:30 - 4:30 at the home of the bride’s parents. A 6 p.m. buffet supper was served for the bridal party and their immediate relatives. The house was decorated with baskets of cut flowers and there also was a three-tier wedding cake made in the shape of a heart.

The mothers of the bride and groom were attired in powder blue and black respectively. Both wore corsages of roses.

Mr. and Mrs. Coyier left for a two-week honeymoon into northern Minnesota and Canada. They will reside in Madison. The bride has completed two years at the University of Wisconsin and one year at the University of Michigan. The groom was in the U.S. Navy for two years and has completed one year at the University of Wisconsin.

For her going away outfit the bride chose a light blue gabardine suit. The fitted jacket was styled with a ripple back. She wore white accessories and a corsage of orchids.

Out of town guests here for the wedding were: Mr. and Mrs. Lee Coyier, parents of the groom, and daughter, Patsy, Mrs. V. V. Nolen, Darlene Grumow, Pudge Rife, Kathleen Gallisted and Sannie Bowe, Madison; Mr. and Mrs. Ted Flink and Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Schweke, Unity; Mr. and Mrs. Gene Coaty and Mr. and Mrs. O.
