Sontag, George L. (17 November 1866 - 19 January 1946)

George L. Sontag, a silent assistant at the bedside of thousands of Neillsville and Clark County residents in the last half century, was buried in the Neillsville Cemetery Wednesday afternoon.

Masonic rites were conducted for Mr. Sontag, highly respected native of the city, who died Saturday January 19, (1946) at his home. He was 79.

As a registered pharmacist, George Sontag has filled the prescriptions of many a Neillsville physician. During his life-time of work at the C. C. Sniteman company, which he headed at the time of his death, Mr. Sontag has watched the majority of a half million prescriptions pass through the apothecary department. Many of them have been brought back time and again for refills.

A native of Neillsville, Mr. Sontag has been associated with the Sniteman drug store for more than 65 years; first as "chore boy" at the age of 12; then as pharmacist, associate and finally, on the death of C. C. Sniteman in 1940, as president of the concern.

The son of Louis David and Anna Dorothea Silverhorn Sontag, Mr. Sontag was born November 17, 1866, in the old Schroeder home on Sixth Street, across from the present Neillsville recreation building.

His early associations with Mr. Sniteman, starting while he was a schoolboy of 12, were the great influence of his life. On his graduation from Neillsville High School in 1888, Mr. Sontag received encouragement from Mr. Sniteman to attend the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. He in turn, later aided other young men to receive their formal education.

In 1940 Mr. Sontag was honored as a semi-centennialist by his alma mater - an honor also re-(balance of obit is missing).
