Davis, Mahlon H. #3 (8 DEC 1880 - 31 JAN 1902)

Chippewa Falls, Wis., Feb. 1, 1902 - M.H. Davis of Granton died at the hospital from injuries sustained at Hollister’s Mill, near Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.). He was unmarried.

Mahlon Davis, the subject of the above short dispatch, was a young man of good character and high aims, and his many friends here will learn of his death with deep regret.

He was a baseball enthusiast and our acquaintance with him grew out of the fact of his frequent playing on Neillsville’s crack team.

He was a son of Rice Davis, himself a baseball enthusiast, and in local sporting circles, especially the absence of this fine young fellow will be deplored. He leaves a large circle of sincere admirers.

The manner of his death was as follows: He was at work on a rollway, and some logs started to roll, he ran on the rolling logs, but got caught by the last log, which rolled over him. He was helped up, and no bones were broken, but Mahlon felt that he was badly hurt, and he had himself taken from the place, not far from Thorp, to Chippewa Falls, standing the ride all right, but at the hospital after an examination the surgeons told him that he could live only a few hours. His father was telegraphed for, and he died as the doctors said he must, soon after.

The funeral was held Sunday at the Woodman Hall, at Granton, there being 700 or 800 people in attendance. Rev. A. Kerr conducted services.
