Schwarze, Herman (27 June 1850 - 27 Aug. 1944)

Herman Schwarze, 94, a pioneer resident of this community,, passed away on Sunday evening, August 27, at 9:50 o’clock, at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. George Schwarze. He had been failing in health for the past two months.

Mr. Schwarze, who was born in Lippedetmold, Germany, on June 24, 1850, came to the United States when he was a young man, with his twin brother, John, and lived for a short time in Sheboygan County. He came to Greenwood 74 years ago. He was married to Christine Meier on Nov. 11, 1873. Mr. and Mrs. Schwarze were among the first pioneers to make their home at Decker Corners, where Mr. Schwarze operated a blacksmith shop. In 1893 they moved to the farm now operated by Otto Schwarze, a son, where they lived until 1920, when they came to the city of Greenwood.

Mr. and Mrs. Schwarze celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Nov. 11, 1923 at the home of their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Schwarze.

They were charter members of the Immanuel Reformed Church on the west side, when it was organized 40 years ago.

Mrs. Schwarze died on Feb. 27, 1937. After the death of his wife, Mr. Schwarze made his home with his children. He was also preceded in death by three sons, Albert Schwarze died on Aug. 16, 1944; Herman Schwarze on October 25, 1932; Frederick who died in infancy, and one daughter, Mrs. Fred (Helen) Buker), who died in August, 1940.

He is survived by three sons, George, Adolph and Otto, of Greenwood; two daughters, Mrs. Mathilda Brick of Greenwood, and Mrs. Sidney (Augusta) Greene of Pueblo, Colo.; also 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

The hour for service of the United Lutheran church service Sunday evening will be at 7:45.

Funeral services for Herman Schwarze, 94, who passed away August 27, were held August 30. The Rev. B. M. Fresenborg officiated. Interment was made in the West Side Cemetery.

During the service the choir sang "Nearer Still Nearer," and "Safe in the Arms of Jesus." The congregation sang a German song. Mrs. Otto Fravert accompanied.

Pallbearers were grandsons: Alvin Brick, Harvey Schwarze, Ewald Schwarze, Orlin Schwarze and Clarence Haight.

Flowers were in charge of the Mesdames Caroline Volk, Bertha Volk, Lillian Warner and Helen Behrens.

People from away who attended were: William G. Benjamin and son, Vern, of Omro; Mrs. Duward Schwarze of Granton; Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Ernst of Spencer; Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Schwarze and daughter, Beatrice, of Owen; Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Devos of Neillsville; and Mr. and Mrs. Nate Wilder of Wausau.
