Rogalski, Frank (10 JUN 1890 - 19 SEP 1945)

Frank Rogalski, a former resident of Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.), shot himself Wednesday noon, Sept. 19, 1945, while visiting with friends at Gilman. He had been working in a war production factory in Chicago for about three years and came back, saying that he wasn’t well, and intended to visit for a while.

Wednesday morning he borrowed a car from one of the neighbors at Gilman and drove to Thorp to visit his brother, John. Here he borrowed a 12-gauge shotgun, and a few 12-gauge slugs, saying he wanted to do some hunting.

About noon some of the neighbors saw him return and enter his home. When Stanley lasick, with whom he took his meals, came to call him for dinner he found Rogalski lying in the bedroom. He had shot himself in the head. Beside the body was the gun and a suicide not addressed to Mrs. Rogalski, who had remained in Chicago.

County Coroner Ed Ruesch was immediately called to the scene. He pronounced the death a suicide.

Frank Rogalski was born in Lamont, Ill., on June 10, 1890, and had reached the age of 55 years, 3 months and 8 days.

At the age of two years he came to Thorp with his parents and they settled on a farm southeast of here. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in World War I at the age of 25 years and served overseas, being in the service 27 months.

On Oct. 1921 he was united in marriage to Mary Mycon at Gilman, Wis. He resided in Gilman where he was engaged in carpenter and blacksmith work, and was also employed as blacksmith at Thorp for some time. In 1943 he and his wife and family moved to Chicago, where he made his home until death.

He is survived by his wife and one son, Leonard, serving in the U.S. Army at Camp Roberts, Calif., three daughters, Valeria, Caroline and Loretta of Chicago, four brothers, Joseph and John of Thorp, Martin of Withee and Peter of Three Rivers, Mich., two sisters, Mrs. Helen Jarosz and Mrs. Eva Langiewicz of Thorp.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Kolman of Sts. Peter and Paul’s Church at Gilman and interment was made at St. Hedwig’s Cemetery at Thorp, with grave service by Father F. Piekarski. Military honors were accorded by members of American Legion Posts of Gilman and thorp, with a salute by the firing squad and taps sounded at the grave. Pallbearers were Lief Larson, Frank Zakrzewicz, Wilfred Vanderhyden, Teofil Piwoni, Hank Huls and Frank Swienton.
