SCHOOL BUSES IN COUNTY TRAVELED 1 1/4 MILLION MILES

The school buses from the eight school districts in Clark County will travel 1,244,339 miles to provide transportation to add from school for 5,569 school from kindergarten through high school age in the 1963 - 64 school year, according to the annual school bus transportation report compiled by Mrs.. Elsie Halle, county superintendent of schools. The total cost of this transportation is $381,126.12. These figures clover all bus transportation, whether by large yellow bus, station wagon or feeder bus, to all public schools, rural and city.

Of the 90 buses with seating ea-parity of 12 or over operating in the county, 52 are privately-owned, and 38 are publicly-owned. They carry 5,012 children at an average cost per bus mile of 31.28c and an average cost per pupil of $61.53. These county averages were compiled from the individual district reports, which ranged from a low in one district of 28.6c per bus mile to a high in another of 34.7c per bus mile. The costs per pupil ranged from a low of $39,89 to a high of $79.89. Approximately one-half of these students travel over five miles each day. Transportation of school children is truly becoming big business in Clark County.
