Asselin, Delila (28 JAN 1861 - 12 NOV 1944)

Mrs. Delila Asselin, 83, passed away Sunday, Nov. 12th, 1944, after a long illness, at the home of her son Edward in the village (Thorp, Clark Co., Wis.). Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) afternoon, Nov. 16 at two o’clock at the Thorp Funeral Home. An obituary will be published next week.

Mrs. Delila Asselin was born in La Crosse, Wis. On Jan. 28, 1861, the daughter of Moses and Eleanor Jolivette. She died on Sunday evening, Nov. 12th at the age of 83 years, 9 months and 15 days in the home of her son Edward, with whom she had lived for the past 2 ½ years.

Her early years were spent in La Crosse and she was united in marriage on Sept. 17, 1878 to the late Jerry Asselin. About a year later they moved to this vicinity and settled on a piece of land in the town of Reseburg, which was then a vast wilderness and which they made into a fine farm, where they lived until Oct. 1920. At that time, they settled in a home in this village. Mr. Asselin departed this life on Sept. 5, 1935 and Mrs. Asselin remained in her home until 2 ½ years ago when her health became such that she could not be left alone. Although she had reached more than the average age, she had been an invalid for the past 8 years, having broken her hip in a fall at that time, after which she was never again able to walk.

Eight children were born to this union, 6 sons and 2 daughters. She leaves to mourn, one daughter, Mrs. Robert Telford, and 4 sons, Albert of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Edward, Gilbert and Layton of Thorp. Her husband and 3 children, one daughter, Edna, and 2 sons, Fred and Jerry Jr., preceded her into the Great Beyond. There are 20 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Asselin was a good mother and a friend to everyone. She will be sadly missed in the home circle, as well as by her friends. She has 7 grandsons and one great-grandson serving in the Armed Forces.

Funeral services were held at the Thorp Funeral Home on Thursday, in the afternoon, Rev. Irish officiating, and the burial taking place in the village cemetery. Her 4 sons and son-in-law and a grandson acted as pallbearers.
