Mattson, Walter R. (5 MAY 1907 - 19 JUL 1944)

                Walter R. Mattson

Pvt. Walter R. Mattson, 37, Editor of the Holdingford, Minn. Herald, was killed in action in France on July 19, 1944. Such was the report received by telegram from the War Department by Mrs. Mattson, his wife.

Pvt. Mattson spent nine and one-half years with the "Thorp Courier", coming here from Cokato, Minn., in 1930. During that time he made many close friends in this community. Honest, reliable and a true sportsman, his passing is deeply regretted by the Courier staff and all who knew him. He was a member of the Thorp Lodge No. 264 A.F & A.M.

He was united in marriage to Miss Elda Kriese at Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.) on Oct. 23, 1932. Five years ago he purchased the newspaper at Holdingford, Minn., which he successfully operated until his induction nearly a year ago, and which work has been carried on by Mrs. Mattson since that time. He also was agent for the N.W. Bell Telephone Co., at Holdingford for the past two and one-half years.

Walter R. Mattson was born in Cokato, Minn., on May 5, 1907. He attended the Cokato High School and graduated from the printing department of the Dunwoody Institute, Minneapolis.

Walt was inducted into the U.S. Army at Fort Snelling on Sept. 28, 1943, and received his basic training at Camp Fannin, Texas. He spent a week at home on delayed route in March 1944, after which he was sent to Fort Meade, Maryland and went overseas shortly after that. He spent two and one-half months in England and about eight weeks in combat duty in the infantry in France. Wounded there, he was awarded the Purple Heart on July 11th.

Surviving are his wife and parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Mattson of Cokato, Minn., two sisters, Mrs. K.C. Stroup, Flint, Mich., and Mrs. Emil Hendrickson, Annandale, Minn., and two brothers, Albin Mattson of Cokato, Minn., and Willard Mattson of Buffalo, Minn.

Memorial services were conducted on Saturday afternoon, Aug. 12th, for the deceased at the Brenner Funeral Home at Holdingford.

Thanks for your hard work.  I knew nothing about my great uncle Walter Mattson other than this Obituary.

If you would like to make an addition to this listing, I have include two pictures I have of Walter for your records.  See attached images.

The last of his surviving brothers and sisters was my grandmother: Amy Stroup of Flint (Burton) Michigan.  She died at the age of 98 in 2002.

I miss her every day…
