Pawlak, Perry Lee (1956? - 6 June 1970)

WITHEE - A 14-year-old Withee boy, Perry Lee Pawlak, son of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Pawlak, of rural Withee, drowned early Saturday evening while swimming in a water-filled gravel pit 3 miles southeast of here in the Clark County town of Hixon.

Clark County authorities, who investigated, said Perry was swimming across the pit, a distance of about 300 feet, and was near the halfway mark when he called out for help.

Robert Arndt, 15, one of four other young people who were at the scene, went to Perry’s rescue. After grappling several times with the drowning youth and being pulled under himself, Robert swam to shore and attempted to throw out a rope but by then Perry had disappeared beneath the water.
