Olson, Nels (15 Nov. 1865 - 30 June 1930)

Nels Olson was born in Oseo, Norway, November 15, 1865, and passed away at his home in the village of Abbotsford Monday, June 30, 1930, at the age of 64 years, 7 months and 15 days, death being caused by asthma and other complications.

At the age of 18 Mr. Olson came to America, landing in New York, from there going to Neenah, Wis., where he resided about twenty years.

On November 26, 1899, he was united in marriage to Anna Hanson, and to this union four sons were born; two of whom preceded their father in death, Sanford dying in 1926 and Gayhardt passed away in 1927.

Near relatives surviving are Mrs. Olson and son Harry and family of Abbotsford, son Clarence and family of Colby, one brother, Ole Olson of Bessemer, Mich., and four sisters, Gena Olson and Mrs. Julius Hanson of Shawano, and Mrs. John Anderson and Mr. Hans Olson of Dorchester, besides nephews, nieces and grandchildren.

Mr. Olson and family came to this community about 28 years ago and engaged in farming and cheese making. In later years the sons took up the work and about five years ago Mr. and Mrs. Olson retired and moved into the village.

Mr. Olson was very well known and had many friends. He was a devoted husband and a kind and indulgent father, and to his friends, the soul of fellowship, always ready to lend a helping hand in time of need, both in acts of kindness and in words.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 2nd at the home at 1:30, and at the Zion Lutheran church in Colby, of which he was a member, at two o’clock, Rev. O. H. Hoffman officiating and paying tribute to the memory of the deceased. The casket was covered with beautiful floral offerings, a tribute to the high esteem in which the deceased was held in the community. Four grandchildren, Mildred, Gladys, Lavern and Harvey Olson, and Violet Kramer, Ruth Haugen, Florence Anderson and Ida Hanson were flower girls.

The following old neighbors and friends acted as pall bearers: Tom Gibson, Henry Radetsky, John Hirsch, Joe Vanderhoof, Lewis Brusky, and Chas. Schultz.

At the close of the services an unusually long procession followed the funeral car to the silent city on the hill west of Colby where internment was made in the family lot besides the two sons gone on before.
