Verseman, Rudolph John (? - 31 Aug. 1954)

Rudolph John Verseman, itinerant farm worker employed the past several weeks on a farm south of Spencer on V occupied by Howard Zerby, was killed at 1:10 o’clock Tuesday morning when a car driven by Edward Snell, route 2, passed over his body. The accident occurred on the south village limits on highway V.

John W. Hildensperger, Marathon County Coroner, said the death was "accidental" and that no inquest would be held. The driver was released. According to the Coroner the victim apparently had fallen asleep on the road.

Gerald Hebert, Town of Spencer, driving south on V at about 1 o’clock, saw the man in the road apparently uninjured and turned back to notify village constable, Alfred Borth.

As Hebert returned to the place where Verseman lay, the car driven by Snell passed him and drove over the man’s body. The Coroner said he thought death was instantaneous.

Howard Zerby told authorities that Verseman had been assigned to him for farm work by the farm several weeks ago. He estimated Verseman’s age at about 53 and said he understood the man had a family but was unable to furnish additional information.

The body is at the Swarthout Funeral Home here. Arrangements for the funeral have not as yet been made.
