Olson, Henry (5 June 1919 - 2 Nov. 1951)

Henry Olson of Unity, age 32, was killed instantly Friday morning at 5:30 o’clock when his car collided with a North Western passenger train at a grade crossing in Marshfield, Wisconsin. He received chest injuries and a broken neck.

Olson, who started work two weeks ago as route man for a new Marshfield bakery, was on his way to work when the crash occurred on S. Central Avenue, Marshfield’s main street. The train, slowing for a stop at the station nearby, stopped within one car length, but it crushed the front end of the car.

Lavern Schuh, Altoona, the train fireman, told police he saw the car approaching and that it appeared to be slowing down, but suddenly picked up speed again. He said the warning signal was operating. Deputy Coroner Dr. F. A. Boekman said no inquest would be held.

An orphan, Olson was the father of five children, the eldest five years of age. Born June 5, 1919, he moved to Loyal route 1 at the age of 15 to live with the Calvin Prior family. He attended rural schools there and joined the Civilian Consevation Corps before serving in the army seven years.

He was at Honolulu when the Japs attacked and saw service in the Aleutians and in Germany before the end of the war.

After the war he returned to Loyal and was married to Miss Dorothy Kannenberg of Loyal. Besides the widow, surviving are five children, Wayne, Larry, twins Sandra and Sue and Lilli Marlene Olson.
