Woodward, Delores (1931? - Oct. 3 Oct. 1951)

While her husband, Marathon County, Wisconsin Traffic Officer Harvey Woodward, Jr., looked on, Mrs. Delores Woodward, age 20, mother of two young sons, was fatally wounded last week Wednesday evening when a 12 gauge shotgun she was moving accidentally discharged.

Although painfully injured, Mrs. Woodward didn’t lose consciousness immediately. Emergency surgery was performed at Memorial hospital, but died shortly before midnight.

? sheriff Myron Mueller said the couple was going to the drive-in theater about 7:15 o’clock and were preparing to get into the car parked in the driveway of their home at 306 Ross street, Schofield, when the tragedy occurred.

Officer Woodward, Mueller said, was seated behind the wheel of the car holding the children. Mrs. Woodward was removing the shotgun from the rear seat so that the children could sleep while their parents watched the movies.

Mrs. Woodward apparently grasped the gun by the muzzle and pulled it toward herself. When the muzzle was near her body, it discharged.

Woodward called for help over the police radio in his patrol car and started for the hospital.

The couple had been hunting Wednesday afternoon. The shotgun is a Model 97 Winchester pump gun, which is equipped with a hammer. The gun is owned by Marathon county and is one of the type furnished the county highway officers as part of their equipment.

It is believed the hammer caught as Mrs. Woodward pulled the gun.
