Schemmer, Anthony L. Dr. (2 Aug. 1890 - 23 Aug. 1951)

Dr. Anthony L. Schemmer, age 61, well-known physician and surgeon in Colby, Wisconsin for 38 years and a member of the staff of St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, Wisconsin, died of a heart attack at his home on Thursday, August 23rd, at 9:45 p.m. He had been suffering from a heart condition the past year and a half but had maintained his practice up to the time of his death.

He was born August 2nd, 1890, in Clintonville, Wisconsin, the son of Bernard Schemmer and Caroline Eva Hoffmann Schemmer. He spent his boyhood in Chilton where the family moved after living briefly in Clintonville and Hilbert.

Dr. Schemmer was graduated Magna Cum Laude and first in his class from the Medical School of Marquette University in July, 1913, and in the same year he opened his practice at Colby, Wis. He was married to Gertrude Dorothy Goessling on July 29, 1914, in Milwaukee, Wis. He was active in many professional and church groups. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the American Academy of General Practitioners, the Wisconsin Obstetrical and Gynecological Society, the State Medical Society, of which he was a former president, the Men’s Catholic Order of Foresters, the Medford Council No. 1744 of the Knights of Columbus, and the Colby Chamber of Commerce. He was also the town of Hull health officer at the time of his death.

Surviving are his widow; a son, John Karl Schemmer, and a grandson, John Anthony Schemmer, of New York City; a brother, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. George Schemmer, two sisters, the Misses Mary and Josephine Schemmer, all of New Holstein, Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, George Paul, a brother, Rev. Joseph Schemmer, of Stevens Point, and a sister, Miss Catherine Schemmer, of New Holstein.

The funeral services were held on Monday morning at 10:00 o’clock at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic church. The celebrant of the Requiem Solemn High Mass was the Rev. N. B. Beschta, pastor of St. Mary’s church; the Very Rev. Michael J. Kelnhofer, of Dorchester served as deacon, Rev. Raymond Schultz of Abbotsford served as subdeacon. The Rev. Basil Reuss, O. Praem, of St. Norbert’s College, De Pere, preached the sermon. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. George A. Schemmer, the brother of the deceased, assisted at the mass in the sanctuary, after having had his private memorial mass at 8 o’clock the same morning.

The pall bearers at the services in Colby were A. M. Steinwand, Ed. Reyer, N. L. Dessloch, A. X. Umhoefer, Frank Goeltz and Harry Bender.

The flower girls were the Misses Wanda Weix, Donna Witte, Marjorie Leonhardt, Barbara Bender, Audrey Whitney, Florence Youmans, Shirley Young, Bernadette Engeldinger, Sandra Steinwand, Anne Steinwand, Sally Salter, JoAnne Markus, all of Colby; Mrs. Marjorie Frane, Mrs. Dorothy Baumgartner, also of Colby; Mrs. Maxine Olson, and the Misses Betty Salter and Sally Salter of Marshfield; the Misses Joanne Seidel, Jeanine Mertens, and Flossie Mertens of Dorchester, Wis.

Family members and relatives from out of town who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. John K. Schemmer and son, John Anthony, of New York City, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. G. A. Schememer and the Misses Mary and Josephine Schemmer of New Holstein; Dr. and Mrs. Patrick Murphy and son, Thomas, of Green Bay; Dr. Frank Murphy of New London; Mr. and Mrs. Robert O. Goessling and grandson, Dean Doleman, Mrs. William A. Schendel, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Leverenz, all of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Many out-of-town friends from Marshfield, Spencer, Unity, Stetsonville, Neillsville, Abbotsford, Dorchester, Owen, Milan, Athens, Medford, Greenwood, Stanley, Stratford, Loyal, Edgar, Stevens Point, Curtiss and Wausau attended the funeral services.

The rosary was said by the members of the Christian Mothers on Saturday evening at 8 o’clock; the Medford Council of the Knights of Columbus on Sunday evening at 7:30; by the members of the Catholic Order of Foresters Sunday at 8 o’clock; and by the members of the Women’s Catholic Order of Foresters Sunday afternoon.

On Monday following the funeral mass in Colby, Dr. Schemmer’s body was taken to the rectory of his brother, Rt. Rev. Msgr. G. A. Schemmer in New Holstein. On Tuesday, August 28th, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. G. A. Schemmer was the celebrant of a Solemn Requiem High Mass in the Holy Rosary church of which he is a pastor. Rev. Heribert, S.D.S., was deacon, Rev. Robert Kline, sub-deacon, Rev. B. Marx, master of ceremonies, and Rev. Bed? S.D.S. assisted in the sanctuary.

The pall-bearers in New Holstein were Dr. A. C. Engle, Dr. F. P. Larme, Attorney W. Mulhern, Mr. Henry Dorn, Mr. Paul Lengenfeldt, Mr. Edwin Meyer. Burial was made in St. Mary’s cemetery at Chilton.

Rev. Basil Reus, in paying tribute to Dr. Schemmer in his eloquent sermon at the services in Colby, Wisconsin on Monday, expressed the feelings of the community when he stated that Dr. Schemmer truly symbolized the "Family Doctor" and that he was not only a citizen but an "Institution" in Colby - a man who never spared himself in his many personal charitable works and in his lifelong devotion to his profession.
