Cook, Walter E. (21 Dec. 1888 - 12 Oct. 1955)

Walter Cook of Unity, Clark Co., Wisconsin assemblyman, died Wednesday evening at 9:00 o’clock at the Methodist Hospital in Madison following an operation. Funeral arrangements have not been made as yet.

Funeral services for Walter E. Cook were held Saturday afternoon at the Methodist church in Unity, Rev. Harvey Schall officiating, and internment was made in the Unity cemetery. Pall bearers were Calvin Cook, Rod Cook, Don Cook, Russell Cook, S. A. Cook and E. E. Capes, all nephews of the deceased.

Assembly Cook was born in Unity on December 21, 1888, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Cook. He married Minnie Yahr in Unity on August 27, 1914. They lived on his father’s farm in the village for seven and one-half years.

He attended the Unity grade and high school and later attended an auctioneer school in Chicago, Illinois and since completing the course served as auctioneer in Marathon, Clark and other counties.

Cook has served as a member of the Unity Village Board and also as treasurer of the Village School Board.

He represented Clark county in the State Assembly from 1939 to 1945 and was re-elected in 1950, 1952 and 1954. He was active in dairy legislation and had served on several Assembly committees and on joint committees of the Assembly and Senate.

Surviving are his widow; two children,, Mrs. John Cromie of Seattle, Wash., and Miss Harriet Cook, at home; two brothers, George Cook of Unity, a member of the Marathon county board of supervisors and who for many years served as captain of the state highway patrol, and Raymond Cook of Marathon; two sisters, Mrs. Andrew Tollefson of Solon Springs and Miss Mabel Cook of Chicago; one grand child.

Legislators present at the funeral of their colleague were Senators Paul Rogan, Ladysmith; Hugh M. Jones, and W. W. Clark and Mrs. Clark, Vesper; and Assemblyman Kuhlman, Eau Claire; Willis Hutnik, Tony; John S. Crawford, Marshfield; and Vincent J. Zellinger and Mrs. Zellinger, Phillips.
