Velek, John Sr. (20 June 1875 - 1 Dec. 1954)

John Velek, Sr., died last week Wednesday night at the age of 79 years at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Chippewa Falls where he had been a patient the past six weeks. Funeral services were held Saturday morning at St. Mary’s Catholic church, Rev. Vincent Schwartz officiating, and burial was made in the Colby (Colby, Clark Co. Wis.) Cemetery. Pall bearers were Bruno Dahlke, Ray Berg, Ted Brill, Harry Svoboda, Al Beck and Paul Sazama.

The deceased was born on June 20, 1875, in Czechoslovakia. He came to the United States in 1888 and settled in Chicago, Ill., where he was married to Barbara Machacek on October 30, 1907. In 1925, they moved onto a farm in the town of Hull where they lived since.

Surviving are his wife; two sons, John, Jr., of 2523 Newcastle Ave, Chicago, Ill., and Frank at home; one sister, Mrs. Joseph Sazama, Jr., of Colby; and two grandchildren.

Mr. Velek belonged to the Western Bohemian Fraternal Herald. He will be remembered by his many friends as a good Christian, honest in all his dealings, of an industrial and kindly disposition and one who always endeavored to discharge his duties to the best of his ability.

Out of town people here for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. John Velek, Jr., and Frank Zid of Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. J. Mahachek of Riverside, Ill., Dr. and Mrs. Frank Sazama and Dr. and Mrs. John Sazama of Chippewa Falls, Mr. and Mrs. Bruno Dahlke of Edgar, James Varana and son of Abbotsford, Mr. and Mrs. John Kubs and daughters, Helen and Angeline Kubs, of Marshfield.
