Thurber, Dr. George W. (17 AUG 1874 - 2 APR 1941)

Dr. George W. Thurber, one of Loyal’s best known and well loved citizens, died at his home in the village early Wednesday afternoon, April 2, 1941, at the age of 66 years. His death was the result of a heart ailment from which he had suffered for several years.

George William Thurber was born at Monroe Center, Adams County, Aug. 17, 1874. His education was received in the graded schools of Monroe Center, the High School in Friendship, and the Chicago Veterinary College from which he graduated in 1913 receiving the degree, D. V. M. After his graduation he practiced the veterinary profession in Monroe Center until he came to Loyal in 1916.

He was married to Miss Clara Young at New Rome, Wis., Dec. 19, 1901. His wife survives him. To Dr. and Mrs. Thurber were born five children, three of whom are living, Herbert Thurber of Stevens Point, Mrs. Dale (Genevieve) West of Loyal and Nancy at home. A daughter, Vivian died in infancy, and a son Earl, died in 1933. There are three grandchildren.

Dr. Thurber was one of the out –standing veterinarians of the state being highly active in combating tuberculosis in cattle, and was an Assistant State Veterinarian for several years. About two years ago he retired from active work because of ill health.

Dr. Thurber was also interested in the work of his community and church. He served the village as its president in 1932. He was a member of the Methodist Church and served on its church board for many years. He was also a member of the Loyal Cemetery board.

The funeral services were held in the Methodist Church Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock with the Rev. O. Jewell officiating. A male quartet consisting of R. B. Colby, A. Wicklund, Rev. Jewell and Roger Steiner sang, "There’s A Beautiful Land" and "Oh Love That Would Not Let Me Go". Miss Melba Tedlund was accompanist, Fellow members of the local Masonic lodge served as pallbearers, attended the church in a body, and conducted their rites for a departed member in the cemetery. The pallbearers were Ray Prior, Hal Voight, Edgar Vick, Jesse Raab, Vernard Kauffman, and Roy Hales.

The many beautiful floral tributes were carried by Bonnie Mae Wicklund, Audrey Ann Zuehlke, Hazel Young, Luella Young, Norma Young, Julia Ann Larson, Janice Trindal, Joyce Trindal, and Lorraine West.

Interment was in the family lot in the Loyal cemetery.

Milwaukee; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sawes, Necedah; Mr. and Mrs. Herman Monroe, Mrs. Emil Hjerstedt, Mrs. Elmer Hjerstedt, Mrs. Clara O’Dell, Mrs. Bertha Hayes, Mrs. Arletta Thirkell, Mrs. Claire Preston, Mrs. Bob Burhite, Mrs. Earl Young, and Mrs. Minnie Krause, Wisconsin Rapids; Dr. and Mrs. E. G. Thom and Bertha Applegate, Phillips; Mr. and Mrs. John Sweney, Endeavor; and Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Christenson, Monroe.
