Bauer, Alphonse (1 Aug. 1893 - 31 Aug. 1952)

The death of Alphonse Bauer of Colby, age 59, was blamed on a fall into an excavation by John Bergemann, Clark county coroner. Bauer’s body was discovered Monday morning at 3:00 o’clock by Fritz Baldes, operator of the Up-town Bar in Colby, who said he was looking for a mop on the rear porch of his establishment when he saw a man’s foot protruding from a hole which had been dug preparatory to doing some concrete work. Baldes notified Francis Steinwand, Colby chief of police, who called Dr. F. F. Nelson. Death was attributed to a broken neck and a skull fracture. The time of death was fixed at about 1:00 P.M.

Coroner Bergemann, who with Frank Dobes, Clark county sheriff, were called from Neillsville, report that no inquest will be held.

Funeral services are being held this Thursday morning in St. Mary’s Catholic church, Rev. Frank Brickl officiating, and internment will be made in the Colby (Colby, Clark Co. Wis.) Cemetery.

Mr. Bauer was born in LeRoy on *** October ?, 18??, and came to Colby in 1915. He married Veronica Beyerl on Novemeber 27, 1917, in Colby, Wis. For many years, he engaged in cement and brick laying work, but, for the past four years had been employed by the Colby Cheese Box Co.

Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Harry (Gertrude) Blackwood of Marshfield; two grand children; six brothers, Julius, Arnold and Max of Beaver Dam, Alvin of LeRoy, Robert of Mayville and Theodore of Milwaukee; three sisters, Mrs. Ervin Lenk of Milwaukee, Mrs. Paul Below of Milwaukee and Mrs. Alvin Kehmeyer of New Foundland.

*** Mr. Bauer’s birth date was taken from the Colby St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery Index, but the obituary records a different date, which looked almost like October 2.
