Gosse, Maynard (16 May 1928 - 29 July 1946)

Maynard Gosse, only child of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Gosse of Abbotsford, was drowned Monday afternoon in the Big Eau Pleine river in Cherokee Park. He was swimming across the river when he began to founder. His companion, Van Gokey, age 16, of Abbotsford, Wisconsin, who was on the shore, swam to his aid, but, according to Gokey’s report to Dr. A. M. Burek, Marathon county coroner, Gosse began to pull him under and Gokey was forced to break loose. Gosse went under and Gokey swam to shore and spread the alarm for help. There is a hole in the river bed about 10 feet deep where the boy disappeared, it was reported.

Other Marathon county officials who answered the call besides the Coroner Burek were Henry Goetzman, chief of the county traffice patrol, Undersheriff Carl Mueller and Martin Hildebrandt. The body was recovered by dragging the river bottom about 4:30 o’clock, an hour and a half after the tragedy happened.

Theodore Schmidt, age 58, of Stetsonville was drowned at approximately the same spot on August 19, 1945.

The youth was born in the town of Colby and reached the age of 18 years on May 16, 1946. He graduated from the Abbotsford High School last spring. He is survived by his parents and two grand parents, William Gosse and Mrs. August Schueller, both of the town of Colby, Wisconsin.

Funeral services will be held at the house Friday afternoon at 1:00 P.M., and at the Christ Evangelical Lutheran church at Abbotsford at 2:00 P.M., Rev. E. H. Sprengler officiating. Internment will be made in the Colby (Colby, Clark Co. Wis.) Cemetery.
