Opelt, Kevin Carl (October 10, 1955 - November 12, 2007)

Kevin Opelt, age 52, of Neillsville died Monday, November 12, 2007 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield, WI.

Kevin Carl Opelt was born October 10, 1955 the son of Kenneth and Ruth (Burfeind) Opelt. He attended St. John’s Lutheran Grade School and Neillsville High School graduating in 1973. After his schooling, Kevin helped on the family farm, and was employed with Opelt’s Sand and Gravel in Neillsville operating the bulldozer. He was united in marriage to Donna Lindner on October 2, 1982 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greenwood, Wisconsin.

"Old Man River" as he was known by his family, loved watching the Green Bay Packers and watching racing, playing cards, going to the coffee shop in the morning, his family trips to Oregon, the Black Hills, fishing trips to Canada, Florida and Texas, but his main love was attending the many sporting events that his kids were involved in.

Kevin was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Neillsville, Wis.

He is survived by his wife Donna; seven children, Bridget (Ben) Rakovec, of Loyal; Eric, Kelly, Holly, Sheila, Jillayne and Joshua, all of Neillsville; two grandchildren, Kyler and Kyra Rakovec; his father, Kenneth Opelt, of Neillsville; eleven siblings, Steven (Pixie) Opelt, of Neillsville; Eugene (Carol) Opelt, of Neillsville; Gayle (Becky, of Grants Pass, Or; Alan, Darlene (Joel) Zschernitz, Rollin (Gail) Opelt, Dawn (Greg) Thoma, Russell (Jill) Opelt, Darla (Gary) Fitzmaurice, Douglas (Lori) Opelt, all of Neillsville; and Donna (Paul) McDonough, of Plum City, WI. He is further survived by his mother and father-in-law, Donald and Mary Ann Lindner of Greenwood, WI.

He was preceded in death by his mother Ruth, and brothers, Keith and Glen.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Kevin will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, November 15, 2007 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Neillsville, Wis. The Very Reverend Woodrow H. Pace will officiate. Providing music will be Ronald Resong, organist and St. Mary’s Choir. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. with an 8:00 p.m., Prayer Service Wednesday, at the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville and again from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Neillsville, Wis.

Honorary casket bearer will be David Keller. Serving as casket bearers will be Gus Ewoldt, Brandon Nigon, Luke Nigon, Tyler Nigon, Bobby Thoma, Daniel Opelt, Paul Opelt and Tony Opelt.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred, to be designated at a later date.

The Gesche Funeral Home of Neillsville is assisting Kevin’s family with arrangements.
