Karstens, Julie A. (Scholarship - 1985)
The Wisconsin Restaurant Association’s (WRA) Educational and Scholarship
Foundation announced the winners of its scholarships for 1985-86. Funds are
awarded to students enrolled in any food preparation course at a Wisconsin
educational school. Neillsville recipient, Julie A. Karstens, attends District
One Tech.
Students applying for scholarships must be recommended by their restaurant
employer, planning to attend or be currently enrolled in a chef’s or cook’s
training program full-time at a Wisconsin Vocational school, and must satisfy
the usual criteria for academic excellence. There are no restrictions regarding
sex, creed, race, etc., nor is financial need a factor.

Farrington, Kathryn Louise (13 June 1918 – 21 September 1985)
Kathryn Louise (Allen) Farrington died at her home in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on
Saturday, September 21.
She was born on June 13, 1918, in Chili, to Lucas and Vivian (Degener) Allen,
and graduated from Neillsville High School in 1936.
She is survived by her husband, Otis; four daughters, Kathryn Albury of
Thonotosassa, Florida; JoAnn Dillehay and Pamela Farrington of Great Falls,
Virginia; Linda Dempster of Houston, Texas; one son, Allen Farrington of South
Miami, Florida; two sisters, Patricia (Allen) Wells of Denver, Colorado; and
Iris (Allen) Musil of Neillsville. She was preceded in death by her parents and
one brother, Sheldon Allen.

Jorgensen, Irving Richard (12 December 1924 – 12 September 1985)
Irving Richard Jorgensen, age 61, died Thursday, September 12, at Memorial
Hospital in Neillsville.
He was born December 12, 1924, at Stetsonville, to Andrew and Martha (Britton)
Jorgenson. He farmed with his parents in rural Dorchester until 1949, when he
moved to rural Withee and farmed with his mother until her death in 1965.
Residing at Havenet Nursing Home in Owen until 1981, he then moved to the
Greenwood Home. He was employed at the ADS Center in Greenwood.
Survivors include four brothers, Raymond, Williams, Iowa; Hans, Fairmont, Minn.;
William, Sheffield, Iowa; and Norman of Withee. He was preceded in death by his
parents and one brother, Lawrence.
Funeral services were held Monday, September 16 at the Maurina Funeral Home in
Owen. The Rev. Richard Sorenson officiated, and burial was in the Dorchester
Memorial Cemetery.

Pederson, Carl J. (12 May 1898 – 19 September 1985)
Carl J. Pedersen, age 87, of Owen, died Thursday, September 19 at Victory
Memorial Hospital in Stanley. Funeral services were held Monday, September 23,
at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Withee. The Rev. Paul Petersen officiated, and
burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Pedersen was born May 12, 1898, in Denmark, to Jorgen and Christina
Pedersen. He came to the United States in 1914 with his parents and settled in
Denmark, Wis. He married Ruth Picus on June 6, 1953, at Withee. He was employed
in Milwaukee as a machinist and had farmed in the Town of Hixon. They moved to
Owen in 1973. He was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church and the Odd Fellows.
Survivors include his wife, one stepdaughter Naomi Brissette, Bethel, Conn.; and
five step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers and one
sister.

Ronigen, Florence (6 December 1922 – 25 September 1985)
Florence Ronigen, 62, of Merrillan, died Wednesday, September 25 in Black River
Memorial Hospital.
She was born in the Town of Alma, Jackson County, on December 6, 1922, to
William and Katherine (Waldbillig) Gohde, and was raised in the Alma Center
area. She married William Ronigen in Black River Falls on April 28, 1945. The
couple farmed for 40 years in the Town of Adams in Jackson County. They moved to
Merrillan in 1983.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Norman, of Merrillan; two daughters,
Arlene Roskos, of Wausau; and Peggy Pellowski, of Taylor; four brothers, August,
of Morrisville, Pa., Henry and William, of Merrillan; and Robert of Edgerton;
two sisters, Viola Reinart and Gladys Peters, both of Merrillan; and four
grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Services were held Sunday afternoon in the Black River Falls United Methodist
Church with the Revs. James Know and Margaret Lynn Scott officiating. Burial was
in Riverside Cemetery, Black River Falls. The Torgerson Funeral Chapel, of Black
River Falls, was in charge of the arrangements.

Schmidt, Marlin George (20 August 1914 - 15 September 1985)
Marlin George Schmidt, 71, of 311 Humbird St., Fairchild, passed away Sunday
morning, September 15, 1985, at his home.
The son of George and Augusta (Arndt) Schmidt, he was born August 20, 1914, at
Wolf River. As a child he attended the Wolf River School. United in marriage to
Josephine Schmidt on May 6, 1939, at Fremont, the couple moved to Fairchild in
1941, where Marlin was a cheesemaker, owning and operating the Southside Cheese
Factory for 25 years. He then worked for the Nelson Muffler Plant in Black River
Falls, retiring in 1979.
An active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fairchild, at the time of his
death he was vice president of the Church Council. For several years he was a
member of the Village Board of Fairchild.
Surviving are his wife, Josephine, of Fairchild; two sons, James, of Fairchild;
and Rick, of Augusta; three daughters, Gloria (Mrs. Ronal Watson), of Rockford,
Illinois; Susan (Mrs. David Olinger) of Amery; and Lois McBride of Osseo; one
sister, Irene Guthu, of Waupaca; twelve grandchildren and one great
granddaughter. He was preceded in death by an infant sister, and by three
brothers, Lawrence, Clarence, and Magnus Schmidt.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 18, 11:00 a.m., at St. Paul’s
Lutheran Church, in Fairchild, with the Rev. Merlin Sasman officiating. Burial
was in the Fairchild City Cemetery.

Steinberg, William C. “Bill” (1904? - 13 September 1985)
William C. “Bill” Steinberg, 80, of Eau Claire, died Friday, September 13, at
Luther Hospital in Eau Claire.
Born in Maplehurst to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Steinberg, he moved to Merrillan at an
early age and graduated from the high school in 1922. After graduating from
Lawrence College, Appleton, he was an insurance investigator for the Retail
Credit Company for 39 years, until retiring in 1968. He married Irene
Reichenbach on November 26, 1931, and they lived in Milwaukee, Oshkosh and
Racine, moving to Eau Claire in 1942.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Ellen Jackson, Monona; a sister, Mrs.
Lloyd (Fern) Helbling, of Black River Falls; five grandchildren and six great
grandchildren.
Services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 16, in the Lake Street United
Methodist Church, Eau Claire, with the Rev. Norman Stephenson officiating.
Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery in Merrillan. Masonic services ere held at Fuller
Funeral Home in Eau Claire on Sunday evening, September 15.

Thompson, Adrian O. (12 January 1939 – 14 September 1985)
Forty-six year old Adrian O. Thompson, of 420 Maple St., Strum, passed away at
his home on September 14.
Born in Eau Claire on January 12, 1939, he was the son of Orville and Annete
(Halverson) Thompson. He had been a broadcast engineer at various television
stations throughout the United States.
Survivors include his parents, of Strum; two sisters, Judith Bautch of
Neillsville, and Ardyth Robertson, Osseo; two nieces and five nephews.
Services were held Tuesday, September 17, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Strum,
with burial in St. Paul’s Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Schiefelbein
Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Melvin Larson, Jr., Ralph Benson, Edwin T. Olson,
Arlan Davidson, Steve Haukeness and Tom Indrebo.

Wegner, Leah J. (1 March 1925 – 24 September 1985)
Mrs. Edward (Leah J.) Wegner, Rt. 2 Granton, passed away, following a lingering
illness, on Tuesday, September 24, at the Neillsville Memorial Hospital.
Born March 1, 1925, at the town of Carey in Wood County, the deceased was the
daughter of Frank and Mabel (Covey) Minor. Following her graduation from
Pittsville High School, in 1942, she married Edward Wegner at her family home on
June 23, 1944. They farmed at the Town of Lynn until the present time.
Surviving besides her husband are three sons, Ronald, Gainsville, Florida, Gary,
Marshfield, and Duane, Granton; a daughter, Diane, of Granton; two sisters Mrs.
Ernest (Joyce) Kiesling, Pittsville, and Bernice Guenther, Marshfield; four
grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.
Visitation was at the Gesche Funeral Home, Neillsville, on Thursday evening and
Friday morning. Rev. E.T. Keller officiated at services held on Friday,
September 27, at Zion Lutheran Church, Granton. Accompanist Caroline Helm and
the congregational singers provided music. Burial was at the Zion Lutheran
Cemetery. Pallbearers were Mike Wegner, Grant Rose, Grant Coulthard, Otto Hasz,
Jack Vandeberg and Anton Vobora.

Wegner, Selma (30 October 1892 – 27 September 1985)
Neillsville Memorial Home resident, Selma Wegner, formerly of Rt. 3 Neillsville,
passed away Friday, September 27, at the age of Ninety-two. She had been ill for
a brief time.
The former Selma Kuenkel was born October 30, 1892, at the Town of Hendren. Her
parents were William and Amelia (Krieg) Kuenkel. After her education she worked
for a couple years at Ladysmith. On October 14, 1915, she married Arthur A.
Wegner at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Globe, and they farmed in the Town of Seif
until his death on April 27, 1977. She continued to reside at the farm until six
months ago when failing health necessitated that she enter Neillsville Memorial
Home.
Surviving are two children, Doris Struble and Clarence Wegner, both of
Neillsville; a sister, Mrs. Fred (Olga) Marg and a brother, Paul Kuenkel, both
of Neillsville; a grandson and three great grandchildren. Preceding her in death
besides her husband were a daughter, Gladys, and several brothers and sisters.
Visitation at Gesche Funeral Home was held Sunday evening and Monday morning
until the 1:30 p.m. services conducted at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Rev. Ralph
Stuebs officiated during the rites and musical accompaniment was provided by
congregational singers and Karen Thoma. Pallbearers were Wayne Grap, Marvin
Marg, Tony Ulesich, Alfred Kuenkel, Elmer Adams and Orin Libby. Interment was in
the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Globe.
