Corrado, Kevin W. (New Job - 1984)

Kevin W. Corrado, MSW, director of social services at Neillsville Memorial Hospital and Home, was recently appointed to serve as president-elect of the Wisconsin Chapter of the Society for Hospital Social Work Directors. In 1986, Corrado will assume the position of president.

This is the first time since the inception of the chapter in the mid-70’s that a director from a small rural hospital was selected to serve as president-elect.

Corrado started employment at Memorial Hospital and Home in 1983 after completing his master’s degree in social work at UW-Madison. Corrado’s previous work experience includes three years as a hospital social worker in Minneapolis. His professional training also includes the attainment of a bachelor's degree in social work at UW-La Crosse.

The Wisconsin Chapter of the Society for Hospital Social Work Directors as affiliated with the American Hospital Association. The chapter’s primary objectives are to promote the improvement and extension of adequate health services for all persons.

Allen, Agda (1 January 1886 – 5 October 1984)

Agda Allen, 88 of Neillsville Memorial Home died there on Friday, October 5. She had been, due to failing health, a resident of the Home for the past 18 months.

Mrs. Allen was born on January 1, 1896, in Sweden to Mr. and Mrs. Gotfried Ottoson. At the age of 16, she immigrated to the United States and made her home in Warsaw, Indiana. She then worked in Chicago for several years. On August 15, 1917, she married Carl Allen in Neillsville ceremonies.

The couple farmed in the Neillsville area for 25 years and then moved to Chicago where they lived for 18 years. In 1960, they returned to Neillsville.

She left no immediate survivors. She was preceded in death by her husband (August 18, 1983); a son, Robert; two brothers; and two sisters.

Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon, October 8, from the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville. The Rev. Paul Forde of Calvary Lutheran Church officiated; burial was made in the Neillsville City Cemetery.

Greub, Carl (3 April 1899 – 8 October 1984)

Carl Greub, 85, a retired area farmer, died on Monday morning, October 8, in Neillsville Memorial Home.

The deceased was born on April 3, 1899, in the Town of Hewett to John and Christina (Weidemann) Greub. He received his education in Humbird area schools and then farmed in the Humbird and Neillsville areas. For many years he resided in the Town of York.

He married Effie Hardwick in September 10, 1918, Neillsville ceremonies. Following the death of his wife in 1967, he moved into the city of Neillsville. He had been a resident of Neillsville Memorial Home for the past two years. Greub was a member of the Neillsville United Church of Christ and served on its board for several years.

Surviving him are two daughters, Mrs. Louis (Esther) Ziegler of Willard and Mrs. Herbert (Gladys) Green of Eau Claire; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Reider of Rockford, Illinois, and Mrs. Lloyd (Bertha) Staffon of Monroe; eleven grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and eight great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife; three brothers, Bill, Fred and John; a sister, Barbara; and a great grandson, Joey.

Funeral services were to be held this coming Friday (October 12) at 1:30 p.m. from the Neillsville United Church of Christ. Officiating will be the Rev. Mark Voll. Burial was to be made in the Town of Mentor Cemetery, with the Gesche Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. (The body was to lie in state on Thursday evening from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. and on Friday morning until 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home and then one hour at the church prior to services.)

Hoffman, Thomas G. (Notice of Death – 14 October 1984)

.A Fairchild man died late Sunday night when struck by a freight train while walking along the railroad tracks running from Humbird to Fairchild.

Dead is Thomas G. Hoffman, 25, Rt. 1 Fairchild. His body was found along the Chicago and North Western Railroad track, a mile north of Humbird and west of Hwy 12. Clark County Coroner Robert Lulloff described the body as “badly mangled” and said it had been dragged 200 feet from where it was first struck by the train. He said the death is believed to have occurred between 11:00 p.m. and midnight Monday.

According to the Clark County Sheriff’s Department, a northbound C&NW train crew reported seeing a body on the track at about 11:30 p.m. They alerted another train crew following about 10 minutes behind. That train stopped and verified the presence of the body and reported the incident.

Authorities said Hoffman was apparently walking home from Humbird along the railroad tracks when he was struck. The tracks run within one-quarter mile of his home. Hoffman was the father of five children.

Kyle, Claude C. (30 April 1904 – 13 October 1984)

Claude C. Kyle, a retired Town of Washburn farmer, died at his 1501 Hewett St., Neillsville home on Saturday morning, October 13.

Kyle was born on April 30, 1904, in Bristow, Iowa, to Adam and Mary (Snell) Kyle. He received his education in Green, Iowa schools and at the age of 15 (in1919) moved with his parents to the Stanley area. He then attended the UW-Madison agriculture short course and subsequently became employed as a milk tester in the southern part of the state. He then farmed in various communities and in 1958 moved to the Town of Washburn where he farmed until retiring in 1968. Six years ago, Neillsville became his home. Kyle married Mary Dietz in June 25, 1929, Patch Grove ceremonies. He was a member of St. Mary’s parish.

Surviving him, besides his wife, are two sons, Gervase of Ventura, California and Lawrence of Neillsville; and two daughters, Sister Marie Kyle, FSP, of Madison and Mrs. Peter (Clara) Misovy of Cudahy. Joining them is a sister, Mrs. Fritz (Agnes) Swatzina, Stanley, and three brothers, Emmett of Stanley, Leland of Monrovia, California, and Lyle of Charles City, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by a son, Patrick, and a brother, Vincent.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday morning, October 16, from St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Neillsville with the Rev. Joseph Henseler officiating. The Gesche Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Burial was made in the parish cemetery; pallbearers were Clarence and John Reinart, John Urban, David Krutsch, Joe Resong and Ellis Williams.

Quinlan, Eva (26 January 1905 – 7 October 1984)

Eva Quinlan died suddenly Sunday morning, October 7, in Neillsville Memorial Hospital. She was 79 and made her home at 23 Hewett St., Neillsville.

The deceased was born on January 26, 1905, in Neillsville, to William and Martha (Wegner) Schultz. She graduate from Neillsville High School and then began her employment with the Neillsville Bank. She was employed by that financial institution for 48 years. In 1937, she married Rodney Quinlan in Illinois ceremonies. She was a member of the Eastern Star.

Surviving her are several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband in October of 1943; a brother, Irving; and a sister, Viola.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon, October 10, from the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville, with burial made in the Neillsville City Cemetery. The Rev. Mark Voll of the United Church of Christ officiated.

Schoenherr, Hedwig M. “Hattie” (22 April 1890 – 22 October 1984)

Hedwig M. “Hattie” Schoenherr, 94, died in Neillsville Memorial Home on late Monday evening, October 22. She had been a resident of the Home for the past 13 years.

The deceased was born on April 22, 1890, in the Town of Weston to Albert and Bertha (Schoenherr) Klueckmann. She received her education in St. John’s Lutheran School in Neillsville and then did housework in Neillsville for several years.

On September 16, 1914, she married Herman Schoenherr in Globe Ceremonies. The couple then farmed in the Town of Weston for many years. After the death of her husband in early November of 1959, Mrs. Schoenherr made her residence in the Globe apartments. She then moved to Neillsville Memorial Home. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran congregation and its Ladies Aid.

Surviving her is a son, Herman, of Muskego; and three daughters, Mrs. George (Victoria) Thoma and Mrs. Harold (Vivian) Thoma, both of Neillsville, and Lorraine Schoenherr of Waukesha. Joining them are to sisters, Mrs. Tillie Kramer of Hales Corners and Mrs. Edwina Pemberton of Portland, Oregon; a brother, William Mitte, Dubuque; 13 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death, besides her husband; two sons, Victor and Gerald; two sisters, Rose and Bertha; and four brothers, Edwin, Walter, Harold and Theodore.

Funeral services were to be held this afternoon, at 1:30 from Immanuel Lutheran Church at Globe with the Rev. Ralph Steubs officiating. Burial was to be made in the church cemetery; the Gesche Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. (The body was to lie in state at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. and again on Thursday morning until 11:00; and then prior to services.)

Short, Colletta M. (7 November 1925 – 8 October 1984)

A longtime organist at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Neillsville, Coletta M. Short, succumbed to Cancer on Sunday afternoon at the Short family residence near Neillsville. She was 58.

The deceased was born on November 7, 1925, in Neillsville to Frank and Helen (Deuldermacher) Schmidt. She graduated from Neillsville High School in 1943 and then worked for her father. On June 21, 1947, she married Glenn Short in Neillsville ceremonies. She then was employed by the family-owned Short Fur Farm. Mrs. Short was also organist for St. Mary’s parish for many years. She was a membe3r of St. Mary’s and its Parish Council or Catholic Women.

Surviving her besides her husband is a daughter, Ann Short, Marshfield; two sons, Tom of Granton and Steve of Neillsville; and two grandchildren. Joining them are three sisters, Eulalia Jones of Westminster, California, Mrs. Ronald (Helen) Syth of Greenwood and Mrs. James (Joan) Butterfield of Waukesha; and five brothers, Valarian Schmidt of Waukesha, Norbert Schmidt of Waupaca, Gerald and Urban Schmidt, both of Neillsville, and Galus Schmidt of Capistrano, California. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Randy; a grandson, Casey; and three brothers.

Funeral services for Mrs. Short were to be held today (Thursday, October 11) at 10:30 a.m. from St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Joseph Henseler officiating. Burial was to be made in the Town of Grant Cemetery; the Gesche Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were to be Richard Adler, Kevin and Dennis Syth, Dale and Floyd Short and Brian Schmidt. (The body was to lie in state on Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. and again on Thursday morning until 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. A rosary service was planned for Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Thur, Velda Amelia (31 May 1913 – 3 October 1984)

Neillsville native Velda A. Thur, 71, died on Wednesday, October 3, at the home of her daughter in Eau Claire. Mrs. Thur last made her home at rural Fairchild.

The deceased was horn on May 31, 1913, in Neillsville to Ben and Clara (Beyer) Wegner. She attended schools in Neillsville and then taught elementary school for a number of years. She was united in marriage to Gordon Thur on October 19, 1940, in Fairchild ceremonies. The couple operated a Fairchild area farm since then.

Mrs. Thur was an organist for many years in Neillsville and at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fairchild. She was a member of Grace Lutheran’s Ladies Society and was past president of the Fairchild American Legion Auxiliary.

Surviving her is a son, Thomas, Marshfield; three daughters, Judy Beck of Eau Claire, Jane Maio of Arlington Heights, Illinois, and Shirley Beckendorf of Farmington, Minnesota; a brother, Robert Wegner, Neillsville; two sisters, Alma Pederson and Agnes Meinholdt, both of Neillsville; and 11 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Friday, October 5, from Augusta’s Grace Lutheran Church with the Rev. Arleigh Lutz officiating. Burial was made in the Fairchild Cemetery.
