Hoppen, George J. (26 Mar. 1882 - 15 Mar. 1935)

George J. Hoppen, a former Colbyite, died Friday morning, March 15, at 6:50 o’clock at St. Michael’s hospital, Stevens Point. He entered the hospital Saturday, March 9, and submitted to an operation Sunday, March 10. Prior to entering the hospital he had been ill for two weeks at his home in Stevens Point, Wisconsin.

Born at Colby on March 26, 1882, Mr. Hoppen was the son of Peter Hoppen, now residing at the Hoppen home on Clark street, and the late Katherine Hoppen. He attended the grade school and High School at Colby and then entered the employ of the Soo Line as express manager, working out of Chicago. He came to Stevens Point in 1908. His marriage to Miss Arabella Betlach of Stevens Point took place on May 27, 1911. He entered the employ of the Copps company, wholesale grocery, as salesman twenty-two years ago and had since been employed in that capacity.

Mr. Hoppen was a member of the United Commercial Travelers.

Surviving besides his wife and father are three daughters and a son, Miss Dorothy Hoppen of Milwaukee and Mary, Harriet and William Hoppen at home. A brother, William Hoppen of Forest Park, Illinois, also survives.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, March 17th. At 3:00 o’clock at the family home, Rev. Geo. A. Casey officiating, and burial took place in St. Stephen’s cemetery.
