Withee - A St. Paul, Minn. man died this morning when his car slid on an ice-covered bridge in Clark County into the path of a semitrailer truck.

Michael J. Hofacre, 27, was pronounced dead of head injuries, according to Clark County Coroner Robert Lulloff. The accident occurred at 7 a.m. today on the Black River Bridge, two miles west of Withee on Highway 29.

According to authorities, Hofacre was driving east when his car went out of control on the ice-covered bridge. It slid into the path of the westbound semitrailer truck, entered the north ditch and caught fire. It was demolished. Hofacre was thrown from the vehicle.

The truck, driven by Thomas L. Jessop, 55, Route 2, Black River Falls, traveled down the steep incline and ended up on the river bank. Jessop suffered no apparent injuries. The truck was loaded with steel and is owned by Lunda Construction of Black River Falls.
