Jones, Sophia (18 Mar. 1854 - 18 Aug. 1933)

Mrs. William Jones passed away last Friday evening, August 18th, at 10:15 o’clock, organic heart disease being the cause of her death. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal church Monday afternoon, Rev. S. E. Bushendorf officiating, and internment was made in the Colby cemetery. Six grand sons acted as pall bearers: William George, John Carr, Milo and Donald Jones, Everett Taylor and Hubert Winebrenner. The flower girls were Vernetta George, Elva Jones, Rosa and Lenola Holmes, all grand daughters.

The choir consisting of Miss Fehlman, Hazel Allman, Madeline Reyer, Grace Riplinger, and Harry Bender, sang "Safe in the Arms of Jesus", and "Jesus Savior Pilot Me", with a solo "The Old Rugged Cross" by Mr. Bender. They were accompanied by Mrs. Bert Hansen.

Mrs. Jones, nee Sophia Thomas, was born March 18, 1854, in the town of Nekima. Winnebago county, thus reaching the age of seventy-five years and five months. At the age of sixteen years, she emigrated with her mother and two brothers to the town of Unity where she lived until her marriage to William M. Jones, March 23, 1873. They lived on their homestead eight and a half miles southeast of Colby until his death in 1902. In 1908, Mrs. Jones moved to Colby which has been her home until her death. Her girlhood days were spent at Nekima and Oshkosh.

Surviving children are Alfred Jones, Stratford; Dan Jones, Ben Jones, of Madison; William Jones, Mrs. Addie George and Miss Lydia Jones, Colby; and Mrs. James Holmes, Rib Lake.

Relatives and friends attending the funeral from out of town were: Mrs. Emil Piehl, Mrs. Louisa Harris, Ellen and Grace Harris, Mr. and Mrs. Fowler, Medford; Mrs. Chas. O’Niel, Mr. and Mrs. Gust Zarling, Mrs. Sam Bradley, Oshkosh, Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Jones, Mrs. John Borkhardt, Arthur and Tifred Borkhardt, Mr. and Mrs. Jake Koehler and family, Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Belonga and Mrs. Belonga, Sr., Ernest and Elmer Belonga, Mrs. W. Seidel, Stratford, Mr. D. M. Jones, Milo, Elva and Donald Jones, Mrs. Irvin Gallagher, Oregon, Wisconsin, Mrs. Dearborn, Soughton, Mrs. Maxwell Dearborn, Niles Center, Illinois, Benjamin Jones, Spring Green, Mr. and Mrs. James Holmes and family, Everett Taylor, Rib Lake, Felix Derouth, Fred Garnett, Eau Claire, Mrs. W. E. Marsh, Stevens Point.

Mrs. Jones was one of our earliest pioneer settlers coming to this community before the time of roads or railroads. Through the span of her life Mrs. Jones witnessed the change from candle light to every electric convenience, from ox team to airplane. She was a devoted mother, a loyal friend, while her cheerful disposition and keen interest in life, and her helpful service to her church endeared her to all who knew her.
