Glende, Herbert Carl (10 June 1899 - 27 July 1931)

Herbert Carl Glende, formerly of the town of Holton but who moved to the city of Colby with his family last spring, died at the Medford hospital Monday morning at 2:45, a fracture of the skull, caused in a car crash last Thursday evening, being the cause of his departure. Funeral services were held at Medford Tuesday afternoon and internment took place in the Medford cemetery.

The deceased was born June 10, 1899, thus reaching the age of thirty-two years, one month and twenty-six days. He was married to Miss Minnie Martin on Dec. 20, 1919. He is survived by his wife and five small children, Isabelle, age eleven; Alvina, ten; Lauranda, age seven; Verna, six; and James, four. Also a sister and four brothers, Mrs. Albert Spark of Altura, Minnesota; Otto of Altura; Walter and Elmer of Winona, Minnesota; William of Wabasha, Minn.

The automobile crash, which was the cause of the fatal accident, occurred last Thursday evening on the highway between Dorchester and highway 13. A truck driven by Glende, and an auto in which Gilbert Copeland and A. Karpinsky were riding, both of Dorchester, collided when, according to the latter two men, Glende was driving east on the wrong side of the road without lights on the truck. Copeland and Karpinsky were driving west and did not see the approaching truck until an instant before the crash.

Copeland suffered severe gashes on his arm, a cut on his lower jaw and several teeth knocked loose. Karpinsky received a gash on his left temple and was slightly bruised. Edgar Paulson autoed the injured people to the Medford clinic where they were treated. The two Dorchester young men then returned to their respective homes but Glende was kept under observation although slight hopes were entertained for his recovery.

Glende was alone in his car, and, according to Copeland and Karpinsky, had been drinking some form of alcoholic beverage.

Karpinsky taught last year at the Lutheran parochial school in Dorchester and Copeland is a son of Mr. and Mrs. William Copeland and has been teaching in the Bruckerville school in Marathon county.
