Last Thursday morning, the writer and Doctor D. R. Freeman boarded the train for Butternut, with the intention of making the muskellunge, in the beautiful Butternut Lake, suffer.

Joe McCully, the dandy newsboy, joined the gang, having heard of the writer’s reputation as a fisherman.

The gang arrived at the lake, engaged a splendid large boat of Mr. Grant, also the son of Mr. Grant as oarsman, boarded the craft, put out the lines and made great preparations for hauling in the scaly monsters.

In about three hours we hauled up at the farm of Dan Hurd, who is known to many of our readers, and right here we wish to say that Mr. and Mrs. Hurd have the handsomest of the many handsome places on the shore of Butternut Lake, and it would be hard to find a handsomer place in the state.

When we pulled ashore and counted our fish the pile consisted of just two, and they belonged to Doc. Freeman, who had never fished for muskellunge before. The two weighted 22 ½ and 24 pounds respectively.

We stopped overnight with Mr. Hurd and the next morning bidding him and his estimable lady farewell, we again made a raid on the fish. At 10 o’clock a.m., we pulled ashore, after five hours hard work, and counted the pile which consisted of the same two fish we had the night before, none had got away. Thus ended the first chapter.
