Schuh, Margaret (24 Mar. 1851 - 13 Feb. 1931)

Mrs. John Schuh, Sr., one of the early settlers of this community, passed away at her home in Colby Friday morning, Feb. 13, a goiter ailment and infirmities of old age being the cause of her departure after an illness of six weeks. Funeral services were held Monday morning, Feb. 16, 1931, at the St. Mary’s Catholic church, Rev. H. Lachnit officiating, and internment took place in the Colby Catholic cemetery. The pall bearers were Chas. Kesler, Victor Frane, Nick Schaffer, Frank Sterzinger, Frank Beyerl and Louis Beyerl.

Mrs. Schuh, a daughter of Laurence and Agnes Schulde, was born March 24, 1851, in the town of Mishicot, Manitowoc county, thus reaching the age of seventy-nine years, ten months and twenty days. She was married to John Schuh at Cooperstown on Aug. 26th, 1872, which union was blessed with fourteen children, four of whom preceded her in death. They came to Colby in 1882 and bought a farm four miles west of Colby which was but partly improved, but, by hard work and privations, built a splendid farm. When they came here, this locality was not built up as it is now and early pioneers endured many hardships. They lived on the farm for forty-seven years and moved to the city of Colby on August 1, 1929, and have resided here ever since.

Besides her husband, ten children survive, namely: John Schuh, Jr., of Colby, Wis., Christena Schuh of Colby, Wis., Annie Stanley of Dixon, Ill., Ed. Schuh of Forreston, Ill., Joseph Schuh of Colby, Wis., Albert Schuh of Colby, Wis., Clara Lindner of Wayete, Miss., Lillian Murray of Milwaukee, Wis., Agnes Burnmeister of Dixon, Ill., Caroline Cece of Chicago, Ill. She is also survived by three sisters, Mary Krause of Little Falls, Minn., Tena Hill of Chicago and Annie Brown of Chicago, a brother, Nick Schulde of Detroit, Mich., twenty-five grand children and three great grand children.

The deceased had been a member of the church choir at Mishicot for eight years, was a charter member of the Christian Mothers’ Society and a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic church. She was a woman of generous impulses, never forgot the hospitable ways of the pioneer and filled the various relations in life and filled them well. But now she is gone and another name must be stricken from the ever lessening roll of our early settlers.

The out of town people here for the funeral were Mrs. Joseph Stanley and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Burnmeister of Dixon, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Murray and Emery Schuh of Milwaukee, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. Louis Cece and children of Chicago, Ill., Irene Schuh and Alma Hanna of Stevens Point, Wis., Mary Baltus, George Baltus, Mrs. Wm. Schultz. Mr. and Mrs. Peter Weber and Mrs. Dennis Regan of Auburndale, Wis., and Mrs. Mike Baltus of Marsfield, Wis.
