Erb, Frederick "Fred" C. (20 Dec. 1875 - 5 March 1936)

Frederick C. Erb, son of Christ and Kathrine Erb, was born at Roethenbach, Canton Berne, Switzerland, Dec. 20, 1875. There he was confirmed at the age of about sixteen. In the spring of 1901, he took leave to the land of his birth, and came to America, locating at Blanchardville, where he worked as cheese maker for two years. The following four years he was cheese maker at Primrose and after that seven years at Springdale.

On March 24, 1905, he was united in marriage to Ella Ruegg, of Madison. In 1914, he moved with his family to Humbird, where he lived on a farm until 1931. From here he moved to Colfax, where he lived three years, and moved to Riley on a farm last year. He had not been ill, and did his regular work until a few hours before his death, which occurred about 10 a.m., Thursday, March 5, 1936, of a heart stroke, having reached the age of 60 years, 2 months and 14 days.

Mr. Erb’s death is mourned by his wife and their thirteen children; ten sons, Carl of Monroe, Adolf and Herman of Cottage Grove., John, William and Edward of Mt. Horeb, Oscar and Arnold at home, Melvin and Paul at Colfax; and three daughters, Ella of Madison, Kathrine and Eileen at home. He is also survived by two brothers, Christ of Riley, Carl and a sister Eliza in Switzerland.

Funeral services were held Sunday, March 8, at the Mt. Vernon Church and burial was in Mr. Vernon Cemetery. Six of his sons acted as pallbearers.

A memorial fund has been sent to the Indian Mission School at Neillsville, Wis.
