Thiel, Herman F. (5 Oct. 1861 - 21 May 1945)

Herman F. Thiel, aged 83 years, one of the pioneer cheese-makers in this section of the state, who established Wood county’s first cheese factory at Nasonville in 1885, died early Monday morning at St. Joseph hospital where he was taken Friday. He suffered a stroke about a month ago. The deceased was born Oct. 5, 1861, in Germany, and came to America with his parents when he was 10 years old, settling on a farm near New Holstein in Calumet county. He learned the cheese-makers trade there. Mr. Thiel was married to Anna E. Cattanach March 4, 1891, at Neillsville by the Rev. W. T. Hendren and they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1941. They made their home at Nasonville until coming to Marshfield in 1892. Mr. Thiel became a stockholder in the Hatteberg Veneer factory. The following spring he reopened his cheese factory, which he sold in 1902. The family then lived at Lindsey and Chili, then returned to Nasonville, purchasing a creamery which he sold in 1914. Since that time the Thiels made their home in Marshfield.
