Funeral Services for Mrs. Mathilda Flink

Was Born in Sweden In 1858 and Came to America In 1880 Locating in Romeo and Unity, to Make Their Home

Mrs. Mathilda Flink, nee Johnson, was born October 14, 1858 in Skaraborgs Lan, Sweden. She was baptized in the Lutheran church of her parents at Lugnas, and was confirmed in the year 1872 in the parish church, and which faith she kept until her death. Mrs. Flink was married to Andrew August Flink on August 15, 1879. To this union twelve children were born. Three of the children preceded her in death. Her husband passed away on May 1, 1941. In the year 1880, she together with her husband emigrated to America and located for some time in and around Romeo and the Unity communities where Mr. Flink found employment in the saw mills. A few years later they bought a farm one mile south of Unity where they raised their family. It was here that both learned the lessons of pioneering life, both sharing the hardship and clearing the timber for a home. Even though she had a large family, she shared her love and help to all in need. She gave of her time without thought of rewards. Through her kindness and thoughtfulness and love she endeared herself to all. Mrs. Flink was a retiring woman, never seeking the praise of her friends.

When the Swedish Lutheran church was organized in 1880 the meeting was held in the Flink home. They became charter members, and held their membership in the Lutheran church until the end of life. Both were faithful and devoted to the struggling church, giving of their means and time. As long as health and strength permitted Mrs. Flink was active in her church. By word and deed she encouraged her family and friends to be faithful to the church.

During the last few years of her life she spent between her children. The summer months would be spent in Unity at the home of Mrs. Ella Stark and the winter at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Marie Dallman at Milwaukee. It was in the latter’s home that she passed away on August 4, at the age of 85 years, 11 months and 24 days. Her death was sudden and unexpected. She was loved and esteemed by all who knew her. Those who mourn her passing are her nine children, Mrs. Marie Dallman, Mrs. Jennie Uecker, Carl and Oscar, all of Milwaukee; William and John of Minneapolis; Mrs. Ella Stark, August and Theodore of Unity; 21 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, and a host of friends. John and Mrs. Uecker could not attend, the former is serving overseas and the latter because of illness.

Funeral services were conducted by Pastor Arthur W. Almquist. Mrs. Flink was laid to rest in the Trinity Lutheran cemetery. The church choir sang Asleep in Jesus and God Be With You Till We Meet Again. Mrs. Almquist sang Sun of My Soul. The pall bearers were her sons, August, William, Carl, Theodore, Oscar, and her son-in-law, Sam Stark. The daughters-in-law and the nieces served as flower carriers, Mrs. Norman Flink, Mrs. Herman Obernberger, Mrs. Bernard Tesmer and Betty Flink.

The out of town relatives attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. David Flink of Bear Creek; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Huebner of Sugar Bush; Adeline Flink of Manawa; Mr. and Mrs. John Schertz of Tigerton; Mr. and Mrs. Martin Flink of Waupaca; Mr. and Mrs. Martin Falk and Mrs. Louis Johnson of Clintonville; Mr. and Mrs. William Dallman of Milwaukee; Ted Dallman of Milwaukee; Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Flink of Milwaukee; Theodore Flink and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Flink of Milwaukee.
