Wiede, August (16 Aug. 1867 - 9 Apr. 1944)

August Wiede Found Dead in Unity Home

August Wiede was born in Germany on August 16, 1867. As a young man he, together with his parents, emigrated to this country. He had been a good citizen of the country of his choice. Upon arriving in this country, he for a time lived with his parents on a farm west of Unity. Later on he entered into business in the village of Unity. As a member of this community he was respected and known for his honesty and industry. Toward the close of his business certain disappointments arose which caused him to retire and undoubtedly burdened him with sorrow. While living in the Unity community he was a faithful member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church. The unfortunate deed which finally brought to end his mortal life cannot be explained by those who knew him well in any other way than that under the weight of affliction he became temporarily deranged. It was not his nature to do rash things at any time. Certain acts of this seem to indicate that his unfortunate demise was not a deliberate act, but an act of a damaged mind, which under stress gave way. His body was found on Thursday afternoon and he must have died sometime during the night. He had reached the age of 76 years, 7 months and 24 days.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at the Lulloff Funeral Home in Colby by Rev. Hoffman of the Colby Lutheran Church. Surviving are Mrs. Louis Luchterhand, niece of Mr. Wiede, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Luchterhand, uncle and aunt, and Mrs. Bertha Luchterhand, aunt. Mrs. Karl Willecke and Mrs. Ted Salter carried the spray of flowers to the grave, the remaining floral offerings being presented to the church. The pall bearers were Karl Willecke, Leonard Nickel, Charles Runge, Charles Ewert, Maynard Yahr and Albert Wieland.
