Mais, Paul J. (31 May 1881 - 8 Oct. 1946)

A Requiem High Mass was read at 9:30 o’clock Saturday morning at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Colby, for Paul J. Mais, 61, Unity, who died of a heart attack at 7 p.m. Oct. 8 while visiting in Pittsburg, Pa.

The Rev. Nicholas Beschta had charge of the rites at the church and at the service which preceded at the Lulloff Funeral Home. Interment took place in the Colby cemetery.

Mr. Mais was born May 31, 1881 in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. He moved to Clark County with his parents in 1885. He was married to Anna Huber on October 25, 1905 and she passed away November 4, 1919, and on October 2, 1939 he married Elizabeth Brehm.

In 1905 he bought the farm just 4 miles west of Unity and made it his home until September 1926, when he became interested in the insurance business which he made his career for the past twenty years.

In 1941 he suffered a severe attack of coronary thrombosis and since then he realized he was living with a damaged heart. On Sunday, October 6, he suffered another attack and on Tuesday, when the family had hopes he would recover and were making plans to move him as far as Chicago, he suddenly took a turn for the worse at 6:00 p.m. and died at 8:10 p.m. He had a happy death, being conscious the full two hours, resigned and contented, knowing he had lived his life.

His nearest survivors are his wife, and three daughters, Lauretta, Marie and Beatrice and one son: Hubert. Another daughter preceded him in death.

He also leaves to mourn two sisters, Mrs. H. J. Welch of Colby and Mrs. Charles Frome, Manitowoc; his brother John Mais of Medford preceding him in death. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren, Dennis and Terrance Cox; Patricia, Theresa and John Collins of Chicago; Daniel Lane of Glen Ellyn and Richard, Paul and Claudia Ann Mais of Tyler, Texas.

Pallbearers at the funeral were: Sylvester, Melvin and Bernard Tennis, Tony Will, Ed Feit and Herb Kanter.

Flower girls were Jessie and Edna Tennis, Evelyn Will and Margaret Steinwand.
