Metcalfe, Dorothy (27 July 1920 - 19 Jan. 1938)

This Thursday morning’s Eau Claire Leader contains a special from Osseo, telling the death of Dorothy Metcalfe, 17 year old daughter of Mr. and Eli Metcalfe, who live a mile south of Osseo on Highway 53.

The accident happened about 9 o’clock Wednesday evening, when the truck of Ben Christianson, a milk hauler for the Osseo condensary, ran off the highway five miles north of Osseo. A tank of gasoline in the back of the truck exploded, and both were burned beyond recognition. The truck was identified by the license plates, and through them the bodies of the man and girl.

Dorothy was born when her parents were residing on Geo. Iffland farm in Houghtonburg, and lived with her parents in this vicinity until the moved to the farm near Osseo a few years ago. Until recently she was a student in Osseo High School. She is survived by her parents, three sisters and one brother. She was a granddaughter of Herman Miller.

No arrangements have been made for the funeral. The coroner of Trempealeau County pronounced the deaths accidental.

Dorothy Leona Metcalfe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elli Metcalfe, was born July 27, 1920, at Neillsville, Wis. Her childhood was spent at Humbird and Osseo. She attended rural schools until she entered the eighth grade at Osseo. For three years she attended Osseo high school. She was a Girl Scout and enjoyed the activities of her school. She attended the Congregational Sunday school and sang in the church choir. Dorothy was a happy, active girl and had many friends.

She leaves to mourn her untimely death, her parents, a brother, Elon, and three sisters, Mrs. Efford Michaletz, Fayella, and Marion, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held from the Oftedahl funeral home, last Sunday afternoon, followed by services at Osseo Congregational. The Rev. L. G. Moland officiated. Interment was in the Osseo Cemetery.

Relatives and friends from away attending the services were: Mr. Herman J. Miller, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Miller, Mr. and Mrs. M. J. Michaletz and family, of Humbird; Mr. and Mrs. John Albeiter, Mr. J. J. Baumgartner, Eau Claire.
