Esther E. Smith, 98, Neillsville, died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007, at the Memorial Medical Center, Neillsville, Wis. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 24, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Neillsville, Wis. The Rev. Timothy Biebert officiated. Judy Trunket provided music. Interment was in Westlawn Cemetery, Augusta. Casket bearers were Dan Smith, David Knoop, Jeff Smith, Jason Garbisch, Derek Sikora and Elliot Sikora.

Esther Elsie Marten was born at home in Clear Creek Township, Eau Claire County, on Oct. 13, 1908, to Edward and Marie (Henning) Marten. She married Carl R. Smith on Nov. 24, 1927, in Augusta. They lived their entire lives in the Augusta, Humbird, Fairchild, Neillsville and Granton areas, where they farmed and raised their family. Her husband died on May 15, 1967. After his death, she did some baby-sitting and also cared for a couple of elderly people in the Neillsville area. She was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and their Ladies Aid, Neillsville, Wis. She enjoyed crocheting, embroidery and playing cards.

Survivors include one daughter, Arlys (Ervin) Knoop, Neillsville; three sons, Kenneth (Marilyn) Smith, Stevens Point, Gordon (Mary) Smith, Stevens Point, and Carl R. (Betty) Smith Jr., Vesper; two daughter-in-law, Donna Smith, Neillsville, and Pat Smith, Mohave, Ariz.; 18 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Sadie Marten, Cornell, and Jesse Marten Montag, Augusta.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Carl; two daughters, Elaine and Arlene; two sons, Earl and Marvin; two brothers, Gayhardt Marten and Walter Marten; and two sisters, Ella Sperber and Della Sieg.

Memorials may be directed to the St. John’s Lutheran Church Organ Fund, 711 W. Fifth St., Neillsville, WI 54456.

The Gesche Funeral Home, Neillsville, assisted the family with arrangements.
