Bass, Sophronia Ann (27 Feb. 1856 - 16 May 1941)

Mrs. Joseph Bass passed away at her home in this city Friday afternoon, May 16, 1941, at the age of 85.

Mrs. Bass was born to Robert and Ann Lida (Rector) McCalvy February 27, 1856, at Campbellsport, Wis., her given name being Sophronia Ann.

When she was a small child, her parents came to Clark County, They settled at Greenwood. The father went to California during the gold rush in 1849, again leaving his home to answer the call of his country during the Civil War. Mrs. Bass, the third child in a family of six children, could remember the efforts of her mother in managing the farm, which was located on the Twenty-Six road, and the numerous cares of her household.

On this farm, the daughter, Sophronia, grew to young womanhood. She taught school for a time and on November 2, 1881, she was married to Joseph Bass. The ceremony was conducted in the home of her parents by Rev. W. T. Hendren of Greenwood.

The couple lived for several years on a farm near Greenwood before coming to Neillsville in 1892, which remained their home permanently. Mr. Bass passed away March 23, 1923.

The life of Mrs. Bass was ideally Christian. She was a faithful member of the Presbyterian Church and as long as her health permitted, she was a tireless worker in its various departments. Hers was a religion carried far beyond mere church attendance, for she practiced it in her home life and among her neighbors and friends. She was possessed of a rare sweet personality and a helpful, sympatric nature.

Rare, too, was the youthful spirit maintained by the departed. By the many friends who so often enjoyed the hospitality of her home, she was considered as "one of the Bass girls." On her 85th birthday when a group of friends planned a party for her, Mrs. Bass remarked: "It isn’t hard to grow old when young people still like to call."

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Lida Meyer, Neillsville, and Miss Josephine Bass, Minneapolis; two brothers, Thomas McCalvy, Butternut, and Albert McCalvy, Grants Pass, Oregon; a brother, George and two sisters, Mrs. Delia Bullard and Mrs. Margaret Russell are dead.

Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Lowe Funeral Home, Rev. Obed Asp officiating. Mrs. Oscar Schoengarth and Mrs. Walter Beilfuss sang, "In the Garden" and ‘Nearer, Still Nearer," accompanie4d at the piano by Mrs. Allen Covell.

Interment was made in the Neillsville Cemetery.

Those who attended the funeral from distant cities were: Mrs. Thomas McCalvy and Mrs. Charles Newell, Mrs. Bass sister-in-law and niece of Butternut; Mrs. Will Smerling, also a niece, New London; a nephew, Ross McCalvy, and wife, St. Paul, and Mr. and Mrs. Archie Sparkes, Humbird.
