Service Held for Child Who Swallowed Acid

Willard - Services for James Jerome Stemikis, who died Wednesday morning after drinking a bottle containing sulphuric acid, were held at the Holy Family Church here at 10 a.m. Saturday, Father Marcel Marinshek conducting the services. Interment was made in the Catholic Cemetery.

Tuesday morning at about 8:30, Jimmie got within reach of the bottle of acid which had stood on a shelf in the Stremikis farm home for twelve years, by climbing to a wash bench and from there to a table. After drinking a small quantity of the fluid, the child screamed and fell to the floor. Mrs. Stremikis took her baby in her arms and ran to the yard where a truck driver had just driven up for the milk. She asked him to take her to the home of her brother where she ?? had her husband who would be passing shortly in the school bus.

A few minutes later the parents, ?? on their way to Greenwood. Finding no doctor there, they headed to Loyal. Here, too, the physician was out, but the office girl called Spencer while the frantic parents hurried on to that village, where they were advised to take the baby to Marshfield. Jimmie was able to talk and hopes for his recovery were maintained until midnight when he sank into unconsciousness, passing away at 3:50 a.m. Wednesday. He was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Stremikis.
