Thompson, Ole (8 SEP 1850 - 13 MAR 1936)

Ole Thompson, 85, one of the first pioneer settlers of this community, succumbed to illness on Friday night at eight o’clock at the home of his son, Arthur Thompson, after an illness of ten days.

Born in Gubransdalen, Norway, on Sept. 8, 1850, Mr. Thompson came to the United States on May 17, 1871. Three years later he began farming in the town of Hoard (Clark Co., Wis.), homesteading 80 acres. He was married at La Crosse in 1878. The family endured the hardships of the early pioneers, getting their mail and provisions from Dorchester when the Wis. Central railroad was built. Until that time an ox team on logging roads was the only means of travel.

In 1916 Mr. Thompson retired and his farm of 220 acres is now operated by his sons, Theodore and Arthur.

Mr. Thompson was president of the Curtiss State Bank for many years and held several town offices at different times.

Mrs. Thompson preceded him in death on Oct. 29, 1917. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Edwin Peterson, Curtiss; Mrs. J.E. Simpson, Sturgeon Bay; Miss Thea Thompson, Beloit; three sons, Theodore and Arthur, town of Hoard; Oscar, Los Angeles, Calif.; one sister, Mrs. Thea Hanson, Sparta. There are 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday afternoon from the Norwegian Lutheran Church, Rev. W.L. Anderson officiating. Burial was made in the family lot in the parish cemetery. Russell Wrolstad sand, "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," at the home and a Norwegian hymn at the church. Myron Duncan of New York, sang "Abide With Me" and "Nearer My God to Thee," at the church. The beautiful floral tributes were in charge of Mrs. Fred Machlett, Mrs. Helga Kluve, Mrs. Glen Schwandt, Mrs. Carla Sturner, Mrs. J.S. Jacobson and Mrs. Charles Peterson.

Pallbearers were John Lokken, Marius Mjolund, A.M. Erickson, Cornell Erickson, Gust Becken and Alfred Thompson. Mrs. A.M. Wilson presided at the organ.

Out of town people attending were Mr. and Mrs. K. A. Jacobson, Mrs. Leon Olson, Mrs. William Toppel, Jule Johnson and Mrs. A. Imslund, Eau Claire; Ole Olson, T.M. Olson, Emil Olson and son of Strum; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Matthias, Hayward; E.R. Erickson, Dorchester; Mrs. J.E. Simpson, Madison; and Miss Thea Thompson, Beloit.
