Koney, Veronica (January 13, 1916 - March 26, 2005)

Veronica Koney, age 89, of Thorp, passed away Saturday, March 26, 2005 at Zastrow Care Center in Gilman.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Polish National Catholic Church in Lublin with Rev. Marion Talaga officiating. Veronica’s grandchildren served as pallbearers. Private inurnment will be held at a later date.

Visitations were held on Monday, March 28, 2005 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Thorp Funeral Home and on Tuesday, one hour prior to services at the church.

Veronica Witkus was born on January 13, 1916 in rural Thorp, WI to Peter and Anne (Ponick) Witkus and was educated at area schools. She was united in marriage to Michael Olejniczak on July 6, 1935 at St. Mary’s Polish National Catholic Church in Lublin. They later divorced. She later married John Koney on January 26, 1957 in Mosinee, WI, and they resided in rural Thorp for many years, running John’s excavating business and the family farm until John’s death on May 26, 1995.

In her spare time, Veronica enjoyed organic gardening, sewing, fishing, picking mushrooms, knitting, and raising bees.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Polish National Catholic Church and the Bee Club.

She is survived by three children: Lawrence (Sarah) Olejniczak of Holcombe, Robert (Jane Olejniczak of Racine, and Sandra (George) Jarocki of Thorp; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three sisters: Vickie Luzinski of Thorp, Leona Hazuga, and Violet Bautch, both of South Milwaukee; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; her son, Roger Olejniczak; her daughter-in-law, Charlotte Olejniczak; one grandson, John Jay Olejniczak; three brothers: Alex Witkus, Louis Witkus, and Steve Witkus; and one sister, Julie Johnson.

Thorp Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
