Cook, Samuel Joseph (25 April 1869 - 15 Sept. 1939)

Samuel Joseph Cook, only son and child of Joseph Milton and Hannah Cook, were born in the town of Grant, April 25, 1869, and passed away about four o’clock Friday morning September 15, 1939, at the age of 70 years, four months and 20 days. Death was caused by a stroke which he suffered eight weeks ago last Tuesday.

With the exception of the past year during which he lived in Neillsville, he spent his entire life on the farm where he was born. After the death of his father the mother married William Hughes in 1871.

November 24, 1899, Mr. Cook was united in marriage to Annie Hantke who preceded him in death December 9, 1916. His marriage to Charlotte I. Baer, who survives, occurred September 18, 1938.

Mr. Cook was well and favorably known in this community. He spent most of his life on the farm in Grant Township, although he had retired from active farm work 20 years ago. He spent some time as an automobile salesman. About 17 years ago he and his half brother, Dan Hughes, took a trip to Canada in a modern covered wagon which he built over the rear of a roadster and which made comfortable sleeping quarters on the trip. Two years ago he made a second trip to Canada taking with him Mr. and Mrs. James Hughes, Marian Hantke and his 80 year-old uncle, Patrick Hughes, who passed away last year. They visited in South Dakota, Montana and with his two brothers, and a sister in Canada. He liked to hunt and fish, delighting in these sports chiefly because of his great love of the woods and fields.

Others who survive are two daughters: Mrs. Alfred (Ella) Magnuson and Mrs. Eugene (Leah) Short both of the town of Grant; one step-daughter, Helene Zinn of Milwaukee; five half-brothers, James Hughes, town of Grant; Daniel P. Hughes, Menomonie; John Hughes of Miles City, Mont.; Michael and Archibald Hughes of Leighton, Canada; one half-sister, Mrs. Michael (Margaret) Murphy of Arcadia Valley Alberta, Canada; six grandchildren, Dale, Jeanette, Glen and Floyd Short, Shirley and Earl Magnuson, and one step-granddaughter, Mary Stockwell Zinn of Flossmor, Ill.

He was preceded in death by one half-sister, Mrs. Louis (Mary Ellen) Hantke, and one half-brother, William, who passed away at Rochester, Minn., last April.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 from the Jaster Funeral Home, Rev. W. M. Bixler officiating. Burial was made in the town of Grant Cemetery. The pallbearers were Carl and Henry Braatz, Lee Bluett, John Pietenpol, Fred Rossman and Richard Selves.

Among those who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. I. M. Stockwell of Volga, S. Dakota; Mr. and C. D. Stockwell, Eau Claire; Mr. and Mrs. William C. Holway, Madison; Mrs. Helene Zinn and Mr. and Mrs. Emil Kreuger, Milwaukee; Atty. and Mrs. Ira Slocomb and Mr. and Mrs. D. P. Hughes, Menomonie.
