Maves, Arnold (1920? - 27 Jul 1932)

The life of Arnold Maves, 12, son of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Maves, residing at the west city limits (Owen, Clark Co., Wis.), was claimed at 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon, while playing, after he had run in front of a delivery truck owned by H.B. Mauel, ice cream manufacturer.

The accident took place in front of the Herbert Haire farm, midway between Withee and Owen, where a Sunday School class party was in progress. The boys had been playing ball, and Arnold Maves and his younger brother had crossed the highway to get the ball. The younger brother secured the ball and was returning to the Haire yard, followed by Arnold. In crossing the highway the younger lad ran in front of a large truck which was passing and Arnold waited until it had passed and then started to cross the highway after the truck had gone by. In doing so he stepped in front of the Mauel truck which was then meeting the larger truck. He was struck by the bumper and thrown against the fender, and the force was so great that his neck was broken. The Mauel truck was driven by Rolland Bacon, and riding with him was Edward LaPage and Edward Roller. The accident was unavoidable, so eye witnesses claim. The truck stopped immediately and the boys then realized that they had seriously injured the young lad. A traveling salesman, following the Mauel truck in an Oldsmobile coupe witnessed the accident and stopped and brought the lad to the Legault Hospital, where upon examination he was found dead. The salesman in giving an account of the accident, stated that the driver of the truck was in no way to blame for the accident, as the young lad did not see the Mauel truck and was struck by the left bumper and fender, and was picked up in the center of the highway.

Arrangements for the funeral have been completed, and services will be held from the Congregational Church Saturday afternoon at 1 o’clock, Rev. W.P. Powell officiating. From there the body will be taken to Ladysmith for burial in Riverside Cemetery.

The bereaved family have the heartfelt sympathy of a great number of relatives and friends in the untimely loss of their son.
