Schendel, Herbert P. (7 JAN 1922 - 26 JUL 2006)

Herbert P. Schendel passed away peacefully at the Don and Marilyn Anderson Hospice Center on Wednesday, July 26, 2006. Visitation will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Madison, on Friday, Aug. 4, at 10 a.m., with memorial services following at 11 a.m. The Rev. Brent Campbell will officiate. The family will take his ashes to St. Matthew’s Cemetery, rural Wilton, for a private inurnment service at a later date.

Herbert Paul Schendel was born Jan 7, 1922, near Wilton, to Emil L. and Anna M (nee Witt) Schendel and was baptized in St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Wilton. His parents moved their family to farm south of Greenwood in 1925. He attended Eaton Center Grade School and graduated from Greenwood High School and the University of Wisconsin Agriculture Short Course. He married Erna M. Vangsnes on Sept. 11, 1940. They were blessed with five children. They purchased his family farm in the Greenwood area, as well as an adjoining farm. He served on the school board, was elected as township assessor, served as president of the Trinity Lutheran Church Council, and served on two co-op boards. He loved hunting, fishing, softball, baseball, playing cards (especially Sheepshead), and spending time with family and friends. In 1963, after being a part-time representative for Aid Association for Lutherans, he moved his family to Reedsburg and took a full time role with AAL. In April 1964, the family moved to Madison where he became a real estate appraiser for the city of Madison assessor’s office.. He retired in April 1984. The family enjoyed the outdoors, including camping, fly-in fishing trips to Canada, and traveling in general throughout the United States. His family was his geartest pride and joy.

Survivors include his wife, Erna; children, Jon (Kay) Schendel, Judith (Darrell) Barth, Linda (Steven) Short, and James (Mary) Schendel; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Phillip Vangsnes: a sister-in-law, Frances Vangsnes; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; four brothers; five sisters; and a daughter, Cora Ann.

Memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 5701 Raymond Road, Madison, WI 53711 and/or the Don and Marilyn Anderson Hospice Center, 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Madison, WI 53711.

The Joyce-Ryan Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
