Miller, Jens (23 OCT 1849 - 14 SEP 1930)

Jens Miller, one of the pioneer residents of the Town of Hixon (Clark Co., Wis.), passed away at his home Sunday morning at about seven o’clock, his death being of natural causes, at an age of nearly 81 years, his birthday taking place next month.

Jens Miller was born in Denmark, Oct 23, 1849. In 1870, at the age of 21, he came to this country and remained at Jersey City, N.J., until 1874, when he moved to Cedar Falls, Ia., and there he was married November 25 to Bodil Marie Hagedorn, of the same year. After farming there for ten years, he and his wife moved to Hampton, Ia., and from there they came to Withee, settling on the place they now own in 1894.

Twelve children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Miller, three of which are now deceased, two girls and one son. They are also the grandparents of twenty-three children.

Mr. Miller was truly a pioneer of this vicinity, coming here and taking the farm on which he lived when it was a virgin forest. Today it is one of the finest farms in the township, all of which has been improved. He was the second settler to arrive at Withee in establishing the Danish colony which was then being planned, and on his farm he found contentment with his efforts and his family. In his early years he served on the town board, school board, and was always active in public affairs, which were for the betterment of the community. In late years as his health began to decline, he gave up his positions, and lived more for his own enjoyment, leaving the work to be carried on by others. He truly was a pioneer and a builder of his community.

Besides his aged wife, he leaves to mourn, five sons, Fred, Thomas, Andrew, and John, all of Hixon township, and Martin of Cambridge, Minn.; and four daughters, Mrs. Nels Hom, Mrs. Emil V. Hansen, Mrs. C.B. Anderson, and Marie Miller at home.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon from the Danish Lutheran Church at Withee, and Rev. J.L.J. Dixon, Lindsay, Neb., and Rev. Mikelsen, Withee, officiating.

Those from away who came to attend the funeral were: Rev. C.L. Dixen, Lindsay, Neb.; Thorwald Neilsen of Fenton, Mich, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Miller; Mr. and Mrs. Martin Miller and two children; Simon Hagedorn, brother of Mrs. Miller, of Fenton, Mich.; Mr. Jens Hagedorn and son, Fremont, of Chicago, and M. Gibson of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Chris Westergaard and won, Alfred Miller of Coulter, Iowa, and Mrs. Karen Jorgensen, Hampton, Ia.; Chris Jensen of Eau Claire; also Mr. and Mrs. Will Ralph, Mrs. Thos. Ralph, Mrs. Nellie Hanson, Chas. Hansen, of Eau Claire; Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Hall of Chippewa Falls and daughter; Mr. and Mrs. N.P. Hansen and son, Albert, of Thorp; V. Geo. Barker of Abbotsford; Miss Eva Barker of Abbotsford, and Mrs. Mable Martin of Dorchester, Wis.
