Gus Krause, 72, former contractor and builder and for many years Neillsville’s Poor Commissioner, a member of the Clark County Drainage District Commission, and a prominent member in the Moose fraternity, died at his home here on August 3rd, and was buried from the Congregational church on Sunday afternoon, the local lodge of the Loyal Order of Moose conducting the services. The Rev. G. W. Longenecker officiated and burial was in the Neillsville cemetery. The Moose rites were read by Past Dictators C. R. Sturdevant and E. L. Kleckner.

Deputy Supreme Dictator E. L. Kleckner gave the lodge history of Mr. Krause’s affiliation in the Moose order, of which he was a charter member when the lodge was instituted on Feb. 4, 1915, and of which there remain 18 of the original charter members. Mr. Kleckner told of Mr. Krause’s early boyhood, of the lack of education and the necessity of having to get out early in life and make his own living, working in logging camps, and coal docks, and though he had no children of his own, he realized the opportunities that he was not able to have and so took such a great interest in the work of the Moose, which cares for teaches and trains the boy and girl of deceased members so that they can go out into the world with an education and trade and not have to go through some of the hardships that he went through. He was conscientious, honest and considerate of those in his daily contact in life, never too busy to give a helping hand and do for others.

For his untiring work in the Moose he was honored with the Fellowship degree in 1922. He held many offices in the local lodge, being Dictator from 1925 to 1931, and was also a member of the Legion of the Moose.

The charter members acted as honorary pallbearers and were: C. R. Sturdevant, Robt. Kurth; E. L. Kleckner, Ora Crockett, Alfred Sherman, Thos. Winters, David Ross, James Paulus, Blutcher Paulus, Elmer Buddenhagen, Geo. Ure, E. W. Crosby, George Zimmerman, Wm. Stevens, F. W. Schweinler, Herman Wagner of Chippewa Falls; Ed. Schroeder of Granton and Wm. Thayer.

Active pallbearers were all Past Dictators which were Edwin Bast, O. J. Warren, Geo. Prochazke, Wayne Potter, Geo. Tibbett and Arthur Kunze.

Visiting Moose were: Mr. and Mrs. Leo Miller, A. Nechvatal, Herman Wagner and son, and Mrs. Bertha Sullivan of Chippewa Falls, and Mrs. Lillian Krauschuster of Bloomer.

Mr. Krause was born at Port Washington March, 1866, and came to Pine Valley with his parents 46 years ago. For many years he lived on a farm at the edge of the city which is now part of the Indian School property. In 1921 he moved into the city of Neillsville, where he lived until the time of his death.

He is survived by his wife, the former Matilda Shupe, to whom he was married in Neillsville in 1902; by a sister, Mrs. Emma Wenzel, Sioux Falls, S. D.; two half brothers of Two Rivers; a half sister of Menasha, and niece, Mrs. Bert Hester, Sioux Falls, S. D.; and also four other nieces.
