OBITUARY

This week the people of Unity and vicinity were shocked to hear of the sudden death of W. J. Colby, which occurred Wednesday March 23rd.

Mr. William J., Colby died March 23rd, 1904 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Jewett where he made his home for the past two years. He was seventy-four years of age.

He was born in Erie Co., New York November 10th 1829. In April 1849 he was united in marriage to Miss Cordelia Hilton of Erie Co. and the same year departed for Chilton, WI., and in 1858 he moved to Missouri and from there to Illinois.

On the 10th day of Nov. 1861 he enlisted for six months as first sergeant in Co E of the 4th Regiment of Infantry in the services of the state of Missouri and at Iron to Feb 24th, 1862 he was discharged from services by reasons of expiration of service. On the 4th of Nov 1862 he again enlisted for 3 years as sergeant major of the 128th regiment of Illinois volunteers in services of the U. S. He was discharged from the U. S. at Cairo March 1863 by reasons of Surgeons certificate of disability.

After this he returned home and in 1864 moved back to New York State, where his wife died after which he moved to Chilton, WI. In 1877 he moved to Unity, where he has since resided until the time of his death.

He leaves four children, one daughter and three sons; twenty-four grandchildren and six great grandchildren to mourn his death.
