Sterling, John A. (10 MAR 1841 - 26 MAY 1916)

Died, at his home in the town of Holeton (Marathon Co., Wis.), May 26th, 1916, John A. Sterling, aged 75 years, 2 months and 16 days.

He was a man of excellent habits, fine moral character, and sturdy constitution, and he continued to be active in his accustomed pursuits until long past the age at which men ordinarily drop out of the ranks of the workers. To this end there is no doubt that his sunshiny disposition largely contributed. He had filled the various relations of life, as son, husband, father, brother, friend, and filled them well. Who can do more?

But he is gone! Another name is stricken from the ever lessening roll of our old soldiers.

John A. Sterling was born at Sterling’s Run, Pa., March 10, 1841. He was united in marriage to Mattie L. Ward of Plover, Portage County, April 11, 1867, where he resided on a farm until the spring of 1874, when he moved to the town of Holeton, Marathon Co., where he lived until his death, May 26th, at 7:10 a.m. His wife died July 12, 1904 and is laid at rest in the Dorchester Cemetery where he was laid beside her Sunday, May 28th, 1916. To this union five children were born, two girls and three boys. One daughter, Mrs. Daisy Drew, died Feb. 26th, 1896; of the remaining are Mrs. Frank Carver of Colby; George Sterling, who lives on the old homestead, and Nedry, near Milan, and Allan at Clifford, Wis. Two sisters survive him, Mrs. Clinton Moss of Plover, and Mrs. Henry Barker of Abbotsford, Wis.

The funeral services were held at the old home, at 1:30, Sunday afternoon, Rev. R.R. Braddick of Colby officiating, assisted by the Colby Choir of the M.E. Church.

Those that attended the funeral from away were: Mrs. Clinton Moss, a sister, Mr. Clinton Moss, John Moss, Lee Moss, Mrs. Eva Sterling, and Will Hartwell of Plover; Mrs. Samuel Iverson and Cecil Sterling of Stevens Point; Mrs. Elizabeth Peters of Fond du Lac; Miss Eva Barker and Mr. and Mrs. Tom Miller of Withee, and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Martin of Dorchester; Mr. and Mrs. George Barker, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Barker of Abbotsford; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Carver and Dorothy of Colby; who were relatives of deceased. The funeral services conducted at the cemetery by the Colby Post, of which he was a member, and were very impressive.
