Helsten, Delmore C. (1 APR 1913 - 15 JUN 2006)

Delmore C. Helsten, 93, Rockford, Ill. (rural Byron), died Thursday, June 15, 2006, in his home, surrounded by family, after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., on Saturday, June 17, at Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, Byron. The Rev. William Nelson, pastor of All Saints Lutheran Church, officiated. Burial took place in the Scandinavian Cemetery, Rockford.

Delmore C. Helsten was born April 1, 1913, in Romeo, to Frederick and Hulda (nee Olson) Helsten. He attended a 1-room elementary school in Romeo. He graduated from Spencer High School 1n 1931. He was baptized and confirmed in Trinity Lutheran Church, Unity. He moved to Rockford in 1936 and was initially employed in factory work. In 1940, he purchased a farm. During the next 55 years, he and his brothers farmed with great enthusiasm and success in Rockford, Byron and Stillman Valley areas. He was a strong, hardworking man with a gentle, compassionate demeanor. He loved farming, caring for livestock, and his precious German Shepherds.

Survivors include one brother, Kenneth; one sister-in-law, Kathryn Helsten; eight nieces and nephews; and many other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters; and three brothers.

The family wishes to express gratitude to Ogle County Hospice Association for their care and support. Memorials may be directed to Ogle County Hospice.
