100 Years Ago (1906)

Bobb’s Mill and Country ‘Round—The house of John Cardinal northeast of here burned to the ground last Friday noon just as the family was eating dinner.

Stanley Sunbeams—The Board of Education has reengaged Prof. H. C. Stairs as principal for the Stanley schools for another year.

Until further notice the Village Board of the Village of Thorp will pay $2.25 per cord for wood delivered at the Power House.

75 Years Ago (1931)

The masquerade ball given by the American Legion Post at the Opera House was a pronounced success. The judges for prizes were: H. C. Tiedemann, Gene Mitchell and Leon Bogumill.

Dill pickles in glass jars, 32 oz size, "a treat" at 21¢; toilet paper, unlabeled, 5 large rolls 25¢; Pure lard, Swift’s 50 lb cans at 10 1/2¢ per lb; Men’s flannel shirts, fancy plaid patterns, all plain colors at 59¢ each.

The most largely attended Farmers’ Institute ever conducted in the county was held at Thorp, January 27 and 28. The aggregate attendance for the two days including the evening was 2,990.

The United States at the present time has 212 religious denominations with 2232,000 places of worship and nearly 45,000,000 members. There should be no difficulty about finding a form of worship to suit any taste.

The "Courier" goes into over 1,000 homes in this vicinity each week. Where can you advertise any cheaper? Advertisements from 25¢ up.

50 Years Ago (1956)

One of the youngest boy scouts to receive the highest award offered by the Boy Scouts of America was Tony Sneider, age 13, when he received the Eagle Award February 7th at the District Court of Honor.

Four attempts at burglary Saturday night and early Sunday morning at as many locations in Clark County, netted only 80 cents in nickels, according to sheriff’s office reports.

Federal conciliators from Minneapolis are scheduled to meet at Stanley with management and labor representatives in a strike at the Stanley division of the Acme Steel Company, which entered its third week.

The city council voted in favor of the recommendation made by the Swimming Pool Committee on accepting the bid of Midwest Pools, Mankato, Minnesota for erecting the swimming pool at a cost of $60,158.

25 Years Ago (1981)

The Rock and Roll Heart Fund Jamboree was held Saturday, February 14, 1981 at the Thorp Care Center. Ken Peterson, 1980 King, crowned reigning Queen Pauline Dmytro and King Louis Badzinski.

For the second year in a row, two Thorp wrestlers advanced to the sectional meet in Glenwood City after placing second in the regional tournament. John Lewandowski at 119 pounds and Joe Boden at 132 both placed second in their respective weight classes.

The Thorp gymnasts gave a solid performance at the Thorp Invitational last Thursday to take fourth place in their own tournament.

10 Years Ago (1996)

Thorp’s very own Bruce and Rose Gulcynski placed fourth in the Wisconsin Jaycees; 1996 Outstanding Young Farmer competition January 27.

Raber’s Foods in Thorp is still closed down. The cheese factory, which closed down January 26, and formerly employed 18 full-time workers, does not look as if it will be opening back up for business this week.
